CM Punk has just signed a multi-fight deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Punk released the news via a video on his Twitter account. Dana White had made a big deal about the fact that he would be speaking with Punk at tonight's UFC 181. White even went so far as to promise that fans would see Punk in the UFC next year. Punk repeated the sentiments in the video.

Few details are available right now, but he has signed up for a multi-fight deal. The contract is only good for one year, but would likely be renewed next December if things went well. Punk will be fighting under his real name, Philip Brooks.

This should hopefully end a year of speculation that Punk would be returning to WWE. Punk had been saying for several months that he had no interest in ever returning to professional wrestling.

Some websites have already claimed that Punk already signed up to fight Michael Bisping in his debut match, but this is not true. Punk has no fights or opponents lined up just yet. The rumour started because Bisping has issued multiple challenges to Punk over the past week.

In addition to basic wrestling, Punk has a background in submission wrestling, Brazilian jujitsu, karate, kick boxing and boxing. He recently did a two-part interview on Colt Cabana's podcast talking about his poor health at the beginning of the year. In addition to a concussion and a serious staph infection, Punk also had an injured elbow and ribs. There was no word on how his health is right now. Then again, he has had nearly an entire year to recover and to train.

I can understand why Dana signed him,
People will watch even if he wins or loses, hell it's been on peoples minds since he signed to WWE (even before then for some).

Its a curious subject he will do in the cage,
Does he have a glass jaw?
Will he run out of gas?
Will he get nervous and fuck up?
How many fights in will his injuries catch up with him?

Brawling skills and injuries will be his Achilles' heel in my opinion.
Any counter bets? (we're betting in candy)

Well it can't be as bad as this
I think he will do ok not sure if he'll be champ unless he really wants to prove his slogan is true 'The Best in the world"

Yeah, the way he spoke about injuries, not sure this would be the best idea.

How soon before he walks out on the company?
He was fired from WWE.

That's not walking out.

If HBK, Undertaker, Steve Austin and others can get pissed and go home until something is worked out and not be called quitters, so can Punk.

I expect Punk will do very well in the first year, and here is why (tip: if you cannot be bothered reading this, just jump to the last one).

1) Punk has genuine MMA experience. He just has never been in front of a large audience before.

2) Punk was training for MMA while he was in the indies and ROH. And since leaving the WWE his training has been more intensive. He is also months away from his UFC debut. Already, Punk has put in more training and time than Lesnar, Lashley or Batista did. He will be in better shape than most of us imagine.

3) They will book Punk like they booked Lesnar. He will only face mainly lesser opponents and his victories will be really played up. Each win will promote him further up the rankings than it would anyone else. He will need fewer wins to get to a title fight. And we have seen before that the UFC likes to keep the titles and title matches to the more marketable fighters. And right now, Punk is the second most marketable person they have after Ronda Rousey.
