It is being reported that Justin Gabriel has asked for his release.

There is very little information right now. It is believed that he asked to leave within the last 24 hours. Gabriel was scheduled to be in the Royal Rumble match tonight, but he may not be appearing after all.

The former model was heralded as the first ever WWE employee from South Africa. He debuted on the first season of NXT and placed third. He then joined the main roster as a member of the Nexus, and then in the Corre. In both stables, he would become a 3 time WWE Tag Team Champion with Heath Slater. Once the Corre split, Gabriel was given a strong push that ended suddenly. Since then, he has featured mainly on NXT AND Superstars. He has had a start-and-stop tag team with Tyson Kidd. Now that Kidd is teaming with Cesaro and Adam Rose, it is safe to say that his alliance with Kidd is officially over. Another rumour is that Gabriel was one of two men who competed as The Bunny mascot alongside Rose. The theory was based on the Bunny having the same skin tone as Gabriel, as well as performing several moves the exact same way Gabriel did. Sin Cara (Hunico) was once shown to be wearing the costume.

There has also been some speculation that Gabriel was summoned to be a witness in the recent assault charges against Slater. A woman had accused Slater of assault in a hotel the night before WrestleMania XXVII. She had spent the last 3 and a half years trying to press charges, but they were dropped a fortnight ago. It was claimed that an unnamed superstar witnessed the whole thing but did not intervene. The speculation landed on Gabriel as he was in a tag team with Slater at the time and the pair often traveled together.

Hulk Hogan was not believed to have been involved with this incident, but remains in custody for questioning.

Gabriel never got any real traction in WWE unfortunate. He can go else where now and better his trade.

One thing in his favour, though. He never really got buried. Sure, he jobbed a few times. Name anyone under 240lbs that hasn't. But Gabriel was booked often and rarely lost. Even as a heel.

With his wrestling style, he will be in high demand with Ring of Honor, Lucha Underground and TNA's X-Division. Due to the way that the first two write their contracts, he could maybe work both.

A stint in Japan would be great. I could see him working a great match with AJ Styles. He really didn't get a break in WWE but at least he wasn't buried by the company.
