You're going in the right direction. I'll give you some tips, if you wanna take'em.
Notice that I use GIMP and i'm not sure how the effects are called in other languages.
First I used a layer that looked like this.
I used an effect called "Solapar" in my version of GIMP. I'm pretty sure photoshop has a similar one.
What it does is combining the shiny and dark parts of the top layer into the bottom one so you get some enhanced shadows and a bit of shine. But not as much as we want.
Then I used this layer
And used an effect called "Clarear solo" It blends ONLY the brightest parts of this layer into the other ones underneath, thus giving it a little bit more of shine, only where it's needed.
And this was the result.
