Independent wrestler Tim Roberts has been found dead.
Roberts is best known for portraying The Zombie on the very first episode of the WWE's Extreme Championship Wrestling show in 2006. The 48-year-old passed away in his sleep last night. He was discovered in his bed this morning. No official cause of death has been announced as yet.
The Zombie character only lasted a few minutes but still gained a massive following. Roberts was only told about the gimmick less than an hour before it debuted. The idea was to symbolise that the new ECW brand would not have over-the-top characters that were common in the WWF in the mid-90's. Sandman would come to the ring and attack anyone with a gimmick that had more depth than his own with a cane.
Roberts would have televised dark matches on Raw and SmackDown the next week. The Raw match ended with Roberts being knocked out after taking a running butt bump from Umaga. Roberts sold it so well that fans in live attendance were convinced that he was legitimately unconscious. He was not offered a contract and returned to competing in indy companies across Northern USA and Puerto Rico. Roberts was trained by Johnny Rodz and had been helping out at Rodz' wrestling school over the last few years.
Last year was a bad year for wrestling related deaths, although it was not as bad as others. Here is hoping that 2015 will not be the same.
Correction: Sites are reporting that Roberts is only 38 years old.
