* Contrary to popular myth, the HIAC match was NOT based on ideas War Games matches from WCW or the NWA. It was based on an infamous roofed cage match between Buzz Sawyer and Tommy Rich in Georgia Championship Wrestling in October 1983. Sadly, this match was never taped.

* Most HIAC matches tend to happen in October simply because the first HIAC match and the Sawyer/Rich match both happened in October.

* In 1985, an NBC Director called Dick Ebersol insisted that WWE used harder ring surfaces on television. Having never wrestled, he wrongly believed that the bouncing ring canvas proved that wrestlers weren’t really getting hurt. After Mick Foley accidentally fell through the HIAC roof in 1998, the WWE brought back the softer ring surfaces. They still hurt a lot, but they are much safer.

* The Kennel From Hell match is not considered a HIAC match… nor is it the first one. Matt Borne and Rip Oliver competed in a ‘Doberman Cage Match’ in April 1981 in Portland, Oregon.

* The taller HIAC cage was introduced in 2006 because the old one was worn out and the new one looked better in HD. Rumours that it looked more intimidating and that fans wouldn’t expect wrestlers to risk falling from that height were really minor reasons.

* Both Undertaker and Bob Orton, Jr. bladed during Undertaker’s HIAC match against Randy Orton. However, Bob was not medically cleared to be involved after testing positive for Hepatitis C during a physical exam. Nobody informed Undertaker until a while after the match. Understandably furious, Undertaker demanded Bob to be fired for not telling anyone that he had the serious infection.

* The WWE’s claim that Undertaker and Triple H have been in the same number of HIAC matches is false. Triple H has been in 9, while Undertaker is about to have his 12th. The pair are tied with 6 wins a piece, for now.

* There have been 30 HIAC matches so far, with 2 having been on Raw in 1998, and another in a dark main event after Raw in 2011.

* There have been 2 HIAC matches at WrestleMania, but only 1 steel cage match.

* Referee Tim White’s career was ended during a Hell In A Cell match. He suffered a shoulder injury in 2002 that left him with limited mobility in the joint.

* D-Generation X (Shawn Michaels and Triple H) are the only tag team to have competed in HIAC twice.

* If the proposed Brock Lesnar vs Undertaker HIAC goes ahead, then it will be the second HIAC match to be repeated. John Cena faced Randy Orton in the cell in 2009 and 2014.

* Lesnar and Undertaker previously faced off in 2002. In both cases, the first encounter was for the WWE Championship and the second is non-title.

* The first HIAC match was in 1997, but the first title change was in 2009 when Undertaker beat CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship.

* Undertaker, Randy Orton and Alberto Del Rio are the only people to have successfully won any championships in a HIAC match. Usually the defending champion leaves with the title.

* The shortest HIAC match lasted just 5:01. It saw John Cena retain the WWE Championship against Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk, Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler in a 5-way match.

* Mick Foley has been in 4 HIAC matches and has never won any.

* Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Mark Henry and Seth Rollins have never lost a HIAC match, but they have only competed in 1 each so far. One more name will be added to this list after Bray Wyatt takes on Roman Reigns, as neither man has been in a HIAC match before.

* On October 4th 2009, the WWE held 3 HIAC matches in one night.

* The HIAC between D-Generation X and Big Show and the McMahons was the only HIAC match to happen outside of the United States. It took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

* The little known HIAC match between Kane and Mankind is the only one that ever ended without a clear winner.

It did not. The match continued after Raw went off the air. An official result was recorded and posted on WWE.com.
