The tournament to crown a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion will begin tonight.
The title was vacated last week after the previous champion Seth Rollins suffered a torn ACL. The WWE quickly announced that there would be a one-night tournament to decide a new champion, just like at Survivor Series 1998. However, the tournament will happen throughout the week.
It is not clear how many tournament matches will actually feature on this year's pay-per-view, but the first of the first round matches will begin tonight. Roman Reigns was originally supposed to challenge for the title at the show, but as you can see, he has not received any special treatment.
It is worth noting that no members of the Brothers of Destruction or the Wyatt Family are featured in the tournament. There had been speculation that the two teams would be facing off in a traditional Survivor Series style elimination match. With this detail, we can maybe expect that match to be booked tonight. There had been conflicting rumours about whether this would be a 4 vs 2 handicap match, or if the BoD would have 2 partners.
We will know after Raw tonight if the quarter finals will be on SmackDown, or included at Survivor Series.
First Round matches:
Big Show vs Roman Reigns
Cesaro vs Sheamus
Alberto Del Rio vs Stardust
Kalisto vs Ryback
Kevin Owens vs Titus O'Neil
King Barrett vs Neville
Dolph Ziggler vs The Miz
Dean Ambrose vs Tyler Breeze
Quarter Finals:
Big Show/Reigns vs Cesaro/Sheamus
Del Rio/Stardust vs Kalisto/Ryback
Owens/O'Neil vs Barrett/Neville
Ziggler/Miz vs Ambrose/Breeze
A photo emerged online showing two alternated first round matches. It is not known if the photo was a hoax, or if the plans have since changed. The photo suggested that Mark Henry would be in the tournament as Reigns' opponent. It also displayed that Big Show would be facing Del Rio. The winners of these matches would have faced each other in the quarter finals.
UPDATE: The earlier photo has now been confirmed to have been a hoax.
