It was rumoured that the WWE will be ending a lot of contracts before this week is over. Sure enough, the first of several releases have been announced.

Ricardo Rodriguez will soon be appearing in the alumni section. Rodriguez is best known for playing Alberto Del Rio's personal ring announcer for years. He then had an ill-fated run as Rob Van Dam's ring announcer (because Van Dam was only due to be around for 3 months at that time). Rodriguez had been lined up to be Rey Mysterio's ring announcer, but the angle was constantly pushed back due to repeated injuries on Mysterio. Rodriguez has competed in dark matches and in NXT as the masked Chimera and El Local characters. He has been in various Spanish announce roles of late. Rodriguez was always tipped to pushed as a full-time wrestler, but it never happened. He has already announced on Twitter that he would like to return to in-ring performing.

Hot favourites to be released include Santino Marella, Brad Maddox, Emma, Sin Cara Tyson Kidd and Alex Riley. Marella recently retired after sustaining a neck injury. He is still on the payroll and is looking for a different role within the company, but it doesn't look likely. Emma is still in the bad books after being arrested a few weeks ago for shoplifting. The WWE realized that firing her would be hypocritical because so may wrestlers have had drug, assault and DUI offenses and were never punished by WWE. So "budget cuts" seems like a more credible reason. The feeling is that Brad Maddox, Tyson Kidd and Sin Cara have all been victims of bad booking, and it will be extremely difficult to rebuild them as credible superstars. Riley is only on the chopping block because the WWE are not keen on putting Christian back into the ring. Christian and Booker T will likely replace Riley gradually. That said, Emma is the only one on this list that WWE management are unhappy with.

The reason for the releases is simply budget cuts. WWE stock values plummeted after it was revealed that WWE had duped investors about buyrates for shows and pay-per-views. Also, the WWE Network has proven to be a flop mainly because of technical issues and failure to meet targets. Some websites maintain that high money contracts to Sting, Hulk Hogan, Brock Lesnar and Ric Flair are all contributing factors.

The WWE recently gave pink slips to 15 other personalities, as well as a high number of backstage personnel. Expect most of the firings to be in the offices.

Hogan's media appearance is big bucks? Really? Sigh, this looks like what TNA faced recently, paying too much for personalities that does not contribute much to the brand.

Is that what happened to his eye? I haven't heard anything about that.

Maybe the WWE has to end the onerous contract of Paul Heyman's client who ended the Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania, Brock Lesnar... He earns a lot of money to fight 4 times in a year. It's crazy. There are a lot of young superstars victims of bad booking like Cesaro.
