Veteran actor James Avery passed away on New Year’s Eve, aged 65.

Avery is best known for playing Philip ‘Uncle Phil’ Banks in the hit TV show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’. He was one of the show’s main cast members, alongside Will Smith (playing a character loosely based on himself) and Alfonso Ribero. He appeared in 147 of the show’s 148 episodes.

In addition to acting in TV shows and films, Avery was also a celebrated voice actor who played main characters in 3 cult cartoons of the ‘90s. The most famous of these was The Shredder in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja/Hero Turtles’. He also lent his voice to the War Machine in Marvel’s ‘Iron-Man’, ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Marvel Action Hour’ shows. It was also him we heard every time Junkyard Dog said something in ‘Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling. Avery narrated for the little known video game adaption of ‘The Lion King’ story book.

Avery amassed 546 appearances in films and television show episodes. Amongst them include: The Blues Brothers, The Brady Bunch Movie, The Jeffersons, Hill Street Blues, The Dukes Of Hazzard, St. Elsewhere, The A-Team, Moonlighting, The Real Ghostbusters, Dallas, Beauty and the Beast, L.A. Law, Aladdin (TV Series), Gargoyles, Happy Gilmore, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Two Guys and a Girl, Dharma & Greg, That ‘70’s Show, That’s So Raven, My Wife And Kids, Charmed, Grey’s Anatomy and Star Trek: Enterprise.

Avery died due to complications following open heart surgery in a Los Angeles hospital.
