The news that thousands of indy wrestling fans have been waiting to hear has finally happened.
The WWE has finally signed Prince Devitt. The cult favourite has several years of international wrestling experience and is still quite young. In addition to being young and good looking, Devitt is also bilingual, which are 3 of the 4 biggest things that the WWE looks for in new talent.
The only thing going against Devitt is his lack of size. Both Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have been keen on focusing their efforts on larger people. This is part of the reason why they are frustrated that fans continue to cheer for Daniel Bryan. Even though Devitt impressed virtually everyone with his WWE tryouts late last year, this one factor was the one thing delaying a contact offer being made.
This may sound unlikely, but the WWE (Triple H) has turned down several top talents in the last year simply because they were less than 5’ 10’’. Key examples include former Ring Of Honor Heavyweight Champions Eddie Edwards and Davey Richards. It was no secret that if they were going to be signed, then they would only be hired as a tag team. Either way, Triple H did not like how small they were and turned them down based on that alone. TNA were super quick in taking advantage of Triple H’s stupidity.
Vince McMahon is also keen on hiring people who are not big names outside of the WWE. The theory is that the wrestler should feel like NXT and WWE are their only means of making it within the wrestling industry. They do not want people who could potentially still be successful internationally or on the independent scene. Prince Devitt is definitely someone who doesn’t need the WWE for a strong career.
Even though the contract was only returned to WWE a few hours ago, there are already concerns about how Devitt will be packaged. There is already a plan for him to make his debut on NXT in the very near future (he has already completed and passed his medical). However, he has been described as having one of most unique gimmicks and wrestling styles today. Even Jim Ross made a cryptic tweet about marketing Devitt, advising whoever hired him to “not change a thingâ€.
This story is the biggest thing to happen to WWE since Paul Heyman's client, Brock Lesnar, broke The Streak.
