The World Wildlife Fund has officially declared Lions to be "Vulnerable".
The "Vulnerable" label is applied when there are less than 5,000 in the known world, including in captivity. Worse still, this does not just apply to one species of lion, but all of them.
"Vulnerable" is one step away from "critical". And tigers are expected to be declared "critical" within the next year. When this happens, there will be a 5 year search for remaining tigers in the wild. If not even one is found, the animal will be declared extinct. It is generally accepted that if the only remaining animals in the species are in captivity, then there is no change of saving the species.
There have been multiple breeds of rhinoceros declared extinct over the last 2 years. Just about every remaining breed of rhinoceros is on the critical list. Others are expected to be declared extinct in the near future.
All of the above animals have been hunted because their various body parts are worth a fortune on the black market. There is still a demand for tigers and lions as pets, even though this is now internationally illegal.
