The WWE Intercontinental Championship is 34 years old today.
The title was first introduced on 1st September, 1979. Pat Patterson unveiled it as the inaugural champion. Legend has it that he won the title after unifying other Heavyweight titles in a tournament in Rio De Janeiro. The tourament never actually existed. Since then, 70 different people have held the title. It was briefly retired for 9 months between 2002 and 2003.
The WWE Website has listed their Top 25 Intercontinental Champions so far. But here is some trivia about the title.
Intercontinental Championship Trivia:
The title is part of the WWE Triple Crown and Grand Slam achievements. The Triple Crown is reached by winning the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Championship and WWE Tag Team Championship during your lifetime. The Grand Slam involves winning the Triple Crown and either the WWF European or WWF Hardcore Championships.
Holding the Intercontinental and European championships at the same time created the Eurocontinental championship. Only 4 men have ever achieved this: D'Lo Brown, Jeff Jarrett, Kurt Angle and Rob Van Dam.
The WCW United States, WWF Hardcore and WWF European titles have all been unified into the Intercontinental championship.
Chris Jericho has won the title 9 times. Jeff Jarrett and Rob Van Dam have both won the title twice.
Pedro Morales is the first person to win the WWE Championship and Intercontinental Championships. He is also the first person to hold the IC title more than once, and has the longest combined time as champion.
The longest single reign as IC champion belongs to The Honky Tonk Man. He held onto it for 454 days (15 months).
Only 3 "families" have held the title. Bret and Owen Hart are brothers (and 'British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith is a brother-in-law). Goldust and Cody Rhodes are half-brothers. Mr. Perfect and Curtis Axel are father and son.
Chyna is the only woman to have held the title. She held it 3 times.
Chris Jericho and Chyna once held the title together at the same time.
When Ahmed Johnson won the title, he became the first African-American to win a singles title in the WWE.
John Morrison is the only person to have held the title with more than one persona. He also held the title as Johnny Nitro.
Bret Hart and Ultimate Warrior have held the WWE Championship and Intercontinental Championships at the same time.
Triple H has held the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the Intercontinental Championship at the same time.
Santino Marella and 'Texas Tornado' Kerry Von Erich have both won the title in their WWE debut.
