Several websites, including non-wrestling related media, are reporting that Madison Square Garden will close for good in 2023.
The building, along with many others in the area, may be torn down to help redevelop Penn Station in New York City, New York.
The building has played host to some of the biggest events in professional wrestling and boxing, including 3 separate WrestleManias. It was also once the sole location for WWE Raw, and is used for more WWE events than any other building.
At one point, there was talk of inducting the MSG building into the Hall Of Fame because of how many landmark moments in WWE history have happened there. It recently lost out on a bid to host WrestleMania XXX, after hosting WM X, WM XX and the first WM. It is no longer used for WrestleManias because the building is not able to seat the number of spectators the annual event brings in.
As this is 10 years into the future, there may still be a possibility of saving the arena.
This follows the announcement that wrestling may be removed from the Olympic games after the 2016 event. Wrestling is one of the very few sports to have featured in every single Olympic games so far.
