The author Tom Clancy has died.

He passed away in an undisclosed hospital in his hometown of Baltimore on Tuesday night. The cause of death is still unknown at this time. He was 66 years old.

Clancy is best known for his books on spy and military fiction and espionage. He has also been a consultant on several movies and video games in the genre. His biggest hits include 'The Hunt For Red October', 'The Sum Of All Fears' and the 'Rainbow Six' series.

Despite writing 18 books, Clancy reportedly hated writing. He once derided it as a career, branding it "miserable work". He also suggested that anyone who thinks it is fun is usually a rookie.

His final publication, Command Authority, is still scheduled for release in December.
