Veteran women's wrestler Cheerleader Melissa has been declared #1 in Pro Wrestling Illustrated's PWFemale 50.
For over 2 decades, PWI has ranked the Top 500 wrestlers in the world annually. For the last few years, they have been ranking the Top 50 women's wrestlers in the United States too.
Both rating systems use a mixture of criteria including: matches worked and won, titles held and defended, quality of competition, etc. However, it also assumes professional wrestling to be real and not scripted. Poor performers who received strong pushes in TNA and especially WWE tend to very well.
Cheerleader Melissa is not the first non-WWE or TNA employee to win the PWFemale 50. Madison Eagles took the honours 2 years ago, when Melissa came second. Melissa previously worked under 3 gimmicks in TNA: Cheerleader Melissa, Alyssa Flash and Raisha Saed. She quit the company in 2009 having rarely won a match with any character. Outside of TNA, she is a highly decorated champion who has always made the top 10 on these lists.
Just like the PWI 500, the list is not devoid of controversy. The second winner was Michelle McCool, who defaulted a victory simply because she held a title throughout much of the evaluation period. As well as Melissa, Eagles and McCool, other winners have included Awesome Kong (Kharma), Mickie James and Gail Kim.
The Top 10
1. Cheerleader Melissa
2. Mickie James
3. Saraya Knight
4. Jessicka Havok
5. Kaitlyn
6. Gail Kim
7. Kacee Carlisle
8. Tara
9. A.J. Lee
10. Mercedes Martinez
