Pro Wrestling Illustrated have announced two of their annual award winners.
CM Punk claims the honours of Wrestler Of The Year for the second year in a row. And A.J. Lee is the Woman Of The Year.
The awards are decided by the readers of PWI. A short list for each category is selected by the staff based on wrestling in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Europe. Reasons for the nominations are seldomly explained, making sure that the polls are not biased. Other awards include Match Of The Year, Most Inspirational Wrestler, Rookie Of The Year, Babyface Of The Year, Heel Of The Year, and others.
Punk qualified for the award as he was the only WWE Champion during the examination period (January - September 2012). The quality of his matches and promos, in addition to fan response, were all considered too.
A.J. Lee was nominated due to her fast rise within the company. At the beginning of the year, she was an inactive valet to Daniel Bryan. She had been in the corner of "boyfriends" (Primo Colon, Hornswoggle, Daniel Bryan) as much as she had been in matches of her own, and she very rarely won. She was "injured" after Big Show accidentally charged into her at ringside. But during the course of this year, she was involved with high profile story lines with Punk, Daniel Bryan and Kane. She was in a main event on RAW (which is a rare accomplishment for women), and even ascended to become the Raw General Manager. She had begun a major winning streak as well as a story line with John Cena when the evaluation period ended.
The issue is due out in January, although some countries may not see it before the Spring.
