An investigation is underway after several dogs managed to successfully register to vote in Northern Ireland.

Like the rest of the UK, the country shall be holding elections in May. People who wish to vote must register by April 20th. But the district of Fermanagh/ South Tyrone has cleared at least 30 fake names, many of which are dogs.

Northern Irish people may not participate in the main UK elections, even though the outcome still affects them equally. These elections are comparable to mayoral elections in larger countries. The majority of political parties fall into 2 categories; Unionists tend to campaign for Northern Ireland to be treated with the same fairness and equality as Scotland and Wales have with England. Republicans prefer to distance Northern Ireland from the UK, and become more like the Republic of Ireland, and not similar to Republicans in America.

During the 1980s and early-1990s, while Northern Ireland was in a civil war, elections used to fall victim to a lot of vote rigging. A large number of Republican votes were often discovered to have been made by people who were deceased by the time of the election. Many of those had been killed in terrorist attacks committed by those who objected to British rule in Northern Ireland.

The embarrassing thing about this latest controversy is that it happened at the last election, and the fake votes were still counted after they were discovered. Michelle Gildernew won a place in office by 4 votes; which were the same number of Harry Potters that voted for her too. In order for these people to be cleared to vote, they needed to have had an official photo ID (passport, driving licence or electoral card) verified, and then checked when the vote was cast in person.

Here is the bit you have been waiting for. Voter names have included; ‘Rover Quinn‘, ‘Blackie King’, ‘Rufus Pollock’,‘Fetch‘, Abraham Lincoln, Wolfe Tone McCann, Elvis Maguire, E.T. Graham, Jaws Murphy and Rod Stewart (five times).

In 2010, there was 64 suspicious names, including Giant Haystacks, Pat the Budgie, Napoleon, Fr. Ted and Cecil the Fighting Cock.
