<big><big>Elysium</big></big> MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
Before the movie :
I've been waiting for this movie since August 2011, when i saw the first photos while they were filming it. I loved Neill Blomkamp's District 9 and was intrigued by Damon's Exoskeleton and how this futuristic environment will turn out.
The casting is pretty good, Matt Damon as the lead character, Jodie Foster as the powerful bad character, Sharlto Copley (District9) as the rough henchman, Alice Braga ( I am legend) as Damon's love interest.
Also, i'm not a lot into futuristic sci-fi with lasers and whatnot (like star wars) but i love when it's a dirty/post apocalyptic future so i had high expectations for this movie.
Movie Plot :
Year 2154, the Earth became an unhealthy, overpopulated, over-polluted place where live poor people while rich ones are living on Elysium, an technically advanced space station built by Armadyne Corporation.
Max Da Costa used to be a kid dreaming to go to Elysium with Frey, the girl he loved, but his life took a different turn, he became an offender, after some time in prison he decided to live away from delinquency and is now working at Armadyne Corporation.
Someday, he was exposed to a lethal dose of radiations during an industrial accident, he only had 5 days left to live.
Max knows that there are med-pods on Elysium, he goes to Spider who agrees to send him on Elysium if he steels some data from a rich man's head, Max targets John Carlyle (William Fichtner) his boss.
The data contains a reboot program made by Carlyle and the Secretary of Defense Jessica Delacourt (Foster) who wants to takes the president's place, she deploys Krueger and his men to track Max, who get stabbed and goes to Frey and asks her to heal him.
Krueger takes Frey and her sick daughter as hostages while Max decides to deal with Krueger : if he gets him on Elysium he will give him the program.
In his quest to be healed, Max finds himself in the middle of a coup d'état and may have the fate of all the poor citizens of earth between his hands.
My impressions :
+ The casting, there are good actors that we don't see in every summer blockbusters
+ The Story, it's nice to see a main character who goes on a quest for himself and not trying to save humanity or protect a damsel in distress. It may sound weird but this kind of selfish behavior is something we can all relate to, the whole "save the girl and maybe the humanity while doing something for myself" happens as a side effect of the quest for himself
+ The universe, the dirty feeling of the earth compared to the sanitized Elysium, the technology with exoskeletons, weapons, etc...looks futuristic but not too much exagerated with lasers everywhere
+ A sci-fi movie with no aliens
+SPOILER***********The end is like "I am legend" it's a happy ending on the whole humanity point of view but sad ending as the main character dies***********END OF SPOILER
- The love Max feels for Frey makes him likeable but doesn't bring a lot the story.
- Frey and her daughter aren't needed to the movie, i know it's good to have side characters to expand the world of the movie but i felt like they were just there because they needed women on the good side to look weak and make Krueger even mor disgusting
- Delacourt's character is not explained enough, it appears like she woke up someday and decided to make a putsch, it should have been digged a little more.
To conclude, Blomkamp made a great movie, everything is credible, the design is interesting, the actors are great. Some people may bitch about the camera work on some fighting scenes but i really enjoyed it. I've read some bad criticisms but i loved it, it's a great action/sci-fi movie and the messages behind it (immigration, healthcare, inequality and pollution) are there but aren't shoved down our throat like "stop being a moron, stop polluting" and it serves as a base to the story of Elysium. Very good movie, GO SEE IT !
