This is a little insight into how candidates for the Hall of Fame work.

First of all, names are discussed by a committee. The committee can change every year, but the WWE Chairman (Vince McMahon) is ALWAYS on the committee. Pat Paterson has been on the most committees. And Triple H was brought in last year.

Each committee member may suggest names for each category. The proposed name will then be discussed by the group. At worst, a majority agreement must be reached before someone can be inducted. It is therefore possible to approve someone for induction without the Chariman's approval.

In some cases, certain names need to have the support of all committee members. This applies to wrestlers who have caused major trouble for the company, or have well documented troubles in their personal lives (for example, multiple drug-related relapses).

The Chairman cannot approve someone for the HOF unless there is a majority agreement from the committee. However, the Chairman has the right to overrule and reject a majority agreement.

Once someone has been approved, the person in question must agree to be inducted. For example, Bruno Sammartino has been approved several times, but refused himself to be inducted.

If the nominee is dead, then the spouse is contacted. If the nominee was not married, or the spouse is also dead, then the father or mother of the nominee is contacted. If they cannot be reached, then the oldest living child of the nominee is contacted (if the are over 21). If this is not possible, then the oldest living sibling of the wrestler is contacted. If none of these are available, then the nominee must be rejected. If the contacted person refuses permission, the committee cannot contact another family member for permission. As Owen Hart and British Bulldog's wives have both said "No", the committee may not approach other family members.

The exception to the above rule depends on who legally owns the estate of the deceased nominee. It is believed that Owen Hart's children will own the rights once the youngest child turns 18. So the WWE may approach the oldest child when she reaches 21 as she would have priority over Owen's wife.

If the nominee is still alive, he may choose who inducts him. However, it is expected that the person in question is either a well-known personality who has been involved with wresting, particularly the WWE. If the committee does not improve the choice of inductor, then the committee may select an alternative themselves. For example, Jerry Lawler chose a television personality who was not well known. The committee overruled him and chose William Shatner.

The person inducting a Hall Of Famer must not be inducted into the Hall Of Fame in the same year.

These are the categories that are considered each year. They may be changed to suit the needs of a specific HOF class.

The number of living inductees must be at least double the the number of dead inductees in each class.

Headliner: This star is the main inductee of the class. It is preferred that he is a multi-time WWE champion. If not, then he should be a multi-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion (pre-1994). This wrestler must be alive.

Posthumous: A male wrestler who has passed away.

Tag Team: The tag team award is given to both members of a tag team individually. But they will be inducted as a team. This award can only be given to a maximum of 2 wrestlers, but may also be given to an additional manager too.

Stable: A group of three wrestlers or more. Managers can be included. Like the tag team award, each person would receive an award, but they would still be inducted as a team. Tag Teams that are famous for having 3 members (e.g. Fabulous Freebirds, Demolition) would be in this category. This award can also be given to multiple members of the same family.

Manager: Someone who was well known as a manager or non-wrestling valet. They are allowed to have had an in-ring career, but they must be better known for not wrestling.

Woman: A woman. This award is sometimes combined with the 'Manager' category.

Announcer: A famous ring announcer, backstage interviewer or colour commentator. They may be wrestlers, but they must be more famous for their work as part of a broadcast team.

International: Someone who is famous for their work outside of the United States.

Promoter: Either a famous wrestling company promoter, or a significant name in running another wrestling company. This can also involve famous trainers. He must not be working for the company in question when he receives the award.

Celebrity: A well-known personality who is well known for their involvement with professional wrestling, but must NOT have had a wrestling career. Actor Andy Kaufman is disqualified for having a short wrestling career, although this is being petitioned.
