David Benoit may already be involved with some controversy, and his career hasn’t even begun yet. He was scheduled to make his debut in the main event of a show organised by a member of the Hart Family.

David Hart is the son of Chris Benoit from his first marriage. We know too well about the Chris Benoit controversy, so let’s not go over it again. David has recently been vocal about his desire to become a professional wrestler too. He has a lot of contacts in the industry because Chris’ friends have been very supportive of the surviving Benoit family members. David insists that he recently had very encouraging talks with the WWE. He claims that they plan to use the Benoit name in the near future, and that he will be working for them soon, using his real name.
However, this contradicts a lot of the advice he had received. Triple H, William Regal, Jim Ross and Chris Jericho have all admitted that they asked David not to become a wrestler. They believed that David would never shake off the controversy tied to his family name cause by his father. They also advised David to finish his education first before perusing any career. If he still wanted to become a wrestler then, he should go train with Lance Storm.
Instead of finishing his education, David then tried to become an MMA fighter. He gave up on this very quickly and decided to get back into wrestling. Smith Hart, the older brother of Bret Hart, started training David. He then booked David for the main event of the Hart Legacy event in June. He was due to team with Chavo Guerrero, Jr.
When Jericho found out about this, he was livid. He knew that David was only put onto the show to draw up publicity and increase ticket sales. Jericho demanded that David be removed from the show because David had NO formal training. Smith claimed that David had been training with Lance Storm and himself. However, Storm confirmed that these were lies. David signed up for several camps with Storm’s wrestling school, but never showed up to a single session. Smith then told Jericho that David would not be in a match, he would just be in some kind of angle.
When Guerrero found out about this, he cancelled his appearance. Smith kept changing what he said David’s role would be. Guerrero figured that Smith had also lied about how much in-ring experience David had (he has none). Since then, it is rumoured that David has been removed from the show entirely. Either way, Guerrero is still refusing to work the event.
Jericho and Guerrero are right to be concerned. With David’s young age and inexperience, there is a serious risk of him being seriously injured, or even killed. Many undertrained rookies have died after taking simple suplexes and drops badly. In one of the Great Khali’s earliest training sessions, his sparring partner botched a flapjack. The man landed badly and later died from his injuries.
In November 1996, Eric “Mass Transit†Kulas was critically hurt due to injuries suffered in his only match. The 17-year-old lied about his age and experience to Paul Heyman. His father verified the lies and provided falsified identification. The untrained rookie then worked a tag team match against the Gangstas (New Jack and Mustafa). He got badly injured during the match and sustained heavy blood-loss. The match was only stopped when Kulas' father publicly confessed that his son was underage.
EDIT: Corrected the misleading information in the last paragraph.
