Help for texture editing

I'm from the SvR section, now i'm trying to do some texture edits on NM, this section always fascinates me.
Ok I don't wanna sound a jackass out here for posting this instead for searching(which I did a bit)..
So my question is.. Can I dump wrestlers, make the edits and place it back something like SvR? Or do I need to make a caw and then do the editing?
A link for noob friendly 'dumping textures' tutorial will be appreciated.

That second link is definitely what you need. It is loaded with tutorials and resources for anyone to get a start modding.
