German soccer star Tim Wiese has claimed that he has been in talks with the WWE about becoming an in-ring performer.
I normally ignore stories like these because they turn out to be made up by the sportsman in question. It was revealed over a year ago that WWE were focusing on hiring bodybuilders and college football players who were over 250lbs and 5' 10''. Since then, a lot of American football players, MMA fighters and various other sportsmen have claimed that they were in talks with the WWE. In just about every case, the WWE had not been in touch. The athlete was just merely trying to the get word out there so that they could grab attention from the WWE. Wiese is similar in that he has not even began wrestling training and has never worked a match. And he is normally a goal keeper who is famous for gaining a lot of weight in a short space of time.
But could he be telling the truth? It is known that the WWE are keen to pick up a new European star after Santino Marella retired earlier this year. Marella is actually Canadian, but he has successfully portrayed an Italian immigrant for several years. With the WWE creating a much larger presence in Germany, it makes sense that they would want a well-known German star in the company. In recent weeks, televised WWE events have been joined by a German announce team. Also, his announcement has picked up a lot of media attention from sports news websites all over the world. Many more so than normal.
It should also be noted that OSR is one of the very few wrestling related sites that have picked up on the story. So that could be another sign that Wiese is trying to get their attention. A similar example is Ken Shamrock. Shamrock had 2 short stints as a pro wrestler, including a decent run in WWE, and winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship at TNA Wrestling's first ever pay-per-view. Both times, he quit wrestling to focus on Mixed Martial Arts. When he retired from MMA, he openly claimed that he was already negotiating a deal with WWE. It was later revealed that neither side had been in contact with the other.
The US has seen very few wrestlers that have actually come from Germany. The biggest name was "Das Wunderkid" Alex Wright, who competed in WCW and retired by the age of 25, turning down a WWE deal. TNA recently teased signing German wrestler Bad Bones. Bones teamed with Samoa Joe in a match at their 'Joker's Wild' event, and then competed in the main event (a battle royal) despite being an unsigned talent. However, Bones never did sign a deal and has not been involved with the company since.
Just about every sports site that reported the story included a photo that Weise tweeted of himself. The photo proves that his recent weight gain was due to his new-found dedication to bodybuilding. And yes, that is the photo below.
