As has been heavily reported, Mark Henry is taking time off to rest an injury, against the wishes of his employers.
Henry abruptly announced his leave at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view. He has not been seen on TV, participated in any interviews or been active on social media since. He logged into twitter to give this cryptic, but deliberate, message.

"The only reason I'm breaking my silence to the twitter world is to tell u I'm not retiring!!!! I have hate in my heart that's too dangerous."
"It's best to be away till I'm right I feel I my hurt someone or do damage to my family by going to jail.tired of holding back."
"I will return when I'm healthy, not because the roster is thin. I AM HURT! Don't hide on the web you got my # call me with that bull sh@t."
"Back to silence!"

Henry was in the middle of a major push when he decided to take time off. While it was known that he did not require surgery, Henry felt that resting it would avoid him getting a more severe injury later on. The WWE were caught off-guard by Henry's decision and only had a few hours to write a story line explaining Henry's leave. WWE officials are furious with him because they have had to completely re-write major story lines on both RAW and SmackDown brands for the next month.
A lot of WWE staff have been very outspoken about Henry's "unprofessional" behaviour. While the WWE publicly says that they don't want superstars risking injuries, they encourage stars to take as little time off as possible. Henry has had several derogatory comments made about him on WWE programming since, particularly by commentator JBL.
The main reason why people are angry at Henry is because there are so many injured stars right now. However, this could also be an act of hypocrisy, as there is now bad feelings towards CM Punk or Big Show for choosing to take so much time off to heal up right now.
There was a plan to turn Henry face, culminating with a match against Big E Langston at SummerSlam. But now that Henry is no longer around, Langston will be receiving a major face push going into SummerSlam. There is no word yet if he will still be facing Henry, but Sheamus and Ryback are both being considered as possible opponents.
