New rumours have emerged regarding why Justin Roberts was released last week. Once again, they have nothing to do with budget cuts.

The WWE chose not to renew his contract when it expired last week. In an unusual move, the WWE reported the decision on their website within an hour of telling Roberts. This has led many to believe that there is heat on the veteran ring announcer. The new theory is that the heat is not on him, but on Kevin Dunn.

Dunn has had several backstage roles. But he is best known as Vince McMahon’s right-hand person. He is believed to have even more influence than even Vince’s daughter Stephanie. Since Triple H became the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dunn’s friends and supporters have found it harder to keep their jobs during staff cuts or contract expirations. The belief is that Triple H is pushing out Dunn’s supporters so that Stephanie would become more influential. And Justin Roberts was considered a close friend of Dunn’s.

As soon as the news of Roberts’ release broke, fans who attended last week’s Raw claimed to have witnessed an incident between Roberts and Michael Cole. The alleged that Roberts and Cole had a heated argument during the commercial break in the middle of the Randy Orton vs Dolph Ziggler match. Roberts was said to have sworn at Cole and flipped him off. But JBL has said that this is impossible because fans using the WWE app would know about it if it happened. Commentators do not get breaks during shows, and they continue calling matches when the television broadcast goes to commercial. Fans were aware when Jerry Lawler had his heart attack or when Cole reprimanded Matt Stryker on air. So even if the live feed was censored, app users would still have noticed if someone at the announce table was involved with an argument.

As Roberts' contract expired naturally, this does not mean that he was fired. This also means that he is not subject to the standard 90-day No Compete clause. Non wrestlers who normally appear on screen are also subject to this. The ban prevents them from appearing on any television show, pay-per-view or i-Pay-per-view without prior consent from the WWE for 90 days. As Roberts' contract expired naturally, he is not subject to the clause. The same also applies to Theodore Long.

Alberto Del Rio was recently released for striking a backstage employee who made a racial remark about him. It has been noted that the employee was a friend of Stephanie’s, and had been involved with multiple other incidents with superstars, and has never been seen to be warned. This adds extra weight to the claim that Stephanie’s supporters are being protected.
