British R'n'B star has had a bad weekend on Twitter, and she only has herself to blame.
Rita told her Twitter followers on Friday that if she got 100,000 re-tweets, she would then release her newest song today (Monday 3rd). But by Sunday evening, she had around 2,000. This is made even more embarrassing when you realize that Rita has nearly 4,000,000 followers.
Instead of accepting that her viral marketing campaign was a flop, Rita decided to make things worse for herself. She deleted the original Tweet, and then claimed that her account was hacked. She claimed that "somebody" was threatening to release music that she had worked really hard on, and it would not be released until it was ready. She said that she had caught the hacker early and admitted to deleting the tweet. However, the general consensus is that her fans know that she is lying.
Part of the desperation has been the surprising response to Taylor Swift's new album and single. Swift made the move from country music to pop music with her album 'Red' in 2013. Sales plummeted quickly after a good first week, and most singles from the album barely impacted the charts. Her latest material has been critically panned, with some radio stations choosing not to play her song 'Shake It Off'. But the song is set to become the highest selling song of 2014 in USA, UK and Canada. The same is true for her new album 'TS 1989'.
This year has gone badly for Rita despite how promising it was at the beginning. She was being marketed as the British Rhianna, and was tipped to begin outselling Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. However, US stars like Iggy Azzela and Charlie XCX have pretty much stolen all of her thunder. Her most recent single 'Never Let You Down' was considered a flop as it did not gain many sales or much radio airplay once it was released.
