Before the movie :
Sin City was one of these movies that bring something different both visually and on the storytelling with its highly contrasted black & white image and short stories. I loved it and after 9 years we finally have a second movie, i had high expectations for this and feared it might not be that good after reading some reviews but i had to make my own mind.
Movie Plot :
Here again, the movie is made by 4 stories.
Just Another Saturday Night Is centered on Marv who is surrounded by bodies and crashed cars without remembering how he got there. What happened ?
The Long Bad Night Johnny is a very lucky young man and very cocky too, he enters Kadie's place and wins at slot machines in just one try and then goes in the backroom to join a poker game led by Senator Roarke. After repeated wins Johnny leeaves the table but he didn't play with the right persons, how bad this situation will turn ?
A Dame To Kill For Dwight is working as a private detective, doing his best to stay away from the man he used to be, this will be difficult when his former lover, Ava, calls him and asks to meet him. She begs him to forgive her for leaving him, her chauffeur Manute will escort her home. Later she tells Dwight that Manute and her husband torture her, will Dwight be able to stay away from his violent side ?
Nancy's Last Dance Four years after the events of That Yellow Bastard Nancy is still having troubles to get past Hartigan's suicide. Drinking heavily, all she can think about is revenge, her only goal is to kill Senator Roarke but how can a stripper kill on of Sin City's most powerful man ?
My impressions :
+ The visual style. Obviously it's still wonderful and makes the movie unique in the sea of movies we have every year.
+ The storytelling. The use of voice-over, the short stories and the characters makes it interesting to watch.
+ Nancy. The way the character evolved after the events of the first movie makes her a more interesting character than she was before.
+ Eva Green. She portrays a wonderful femme fatale, balancing between a seductive lady and a crazy bitch.
+ Poetic. Maybe it's not the most obvious thing that comes to mind when you think about Sin City but there are some lines, mainly in the voice overs, that sound just beautiful.
- The long Bad Night. I wish this story was a bit longer, Johnny is a likeable character and i would have liked to see more of him.
- The end. Every story comes to an end on a high note except the last story which ends the film in a flat way.
To conclude, the movie didn't disappoint me at all. Of course a lot of its interest is the style but the stories are damn good too. If you haven't seen the first one i wouldn't recommend to start with a Dame To Kill For, the way i see it is pretty simple, if you didn't like the first movie you won't like that one, if you liked the first movie this one won't disappoint you.
