There has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not AJ Lee's promo on Raw was genuine or not. We can now reveal that it... was an unscripted work.
The day after John Cena announced he was leaving to have surgery, a message was sent around the Raw, SmackDown and NXT locker rooms. The Superstars and Divas advised that the McMahons and Triple H are concerned about not having enough big stars. So if any mid-carder wanted to get noticed, now was the best time to do it.
Right now, all of the focus on the Divas division is set on making Total Divas a success. So it is very likely that Brie Bella will soon be winning the Divas Title in order to help promote the show. Like a lot of other Divas, AJ is worried that she will be pushed down as she is not involved with the new show. So her promo on Raw was her attempt at showing the McMahons that she is ready to be one of WWE's bigger stars.
The original script called for AJ to taunt the Total Divas by PRAISING their show (thus putting the show over). No one knew that AJ was planning a different promo until she started talking.
The confusion came about as AJ reportedly does not get along with the Bella Twins or Cameron for real, but she is good friends with Natalya and Naomi. This can be highlighted by some of the comments that were directed at the Bellas specifically.
The Bellas and Natalya genuinely thought that AJ was expressing her actual thoughts. As a result, the Bellas are genuinely offended by her remarks. Natayla was surprised that AJ had genuine negativity towards her. She was also concerned that some of the hardships that AJ said she endured are lies, and young fans may be convinced by them.
It is not known if Naomi or Cameron believed her promo or not. But they currently know that it was a work, and are playing along.
The general feeling is that AJ's promo is the best promo delivered by a Diva this year. This is a particularly significant feat as Triple H, Randy Orton, CM Punk and Paul Heyman all had microphone time on the show, and AJ did better than all of them too.
