<big><big>Transcendance</big></big>
Before the movie :
I was excited about this movie when i first heard about it, the topic it deals with, the casting and everything i read before it's release got me interested. Than the movie came out in US and got lots of bad reviews but i had to make my own opinion.
Movie Plot :
In the near future, Dr Will Caster (J.Depp) and a team of other scientists create PINN, a sentient computer, and BOlieve that such a thing would allow a technological singularity (in short, technology would be so advanced that humanity will know a technological growth far superior thanks to that sentient A.I), the Transcendance.
The R.I.F.T, a revolutionary group against such technology led by Bree (K.Mara), organised similtaneous attacks against these scientists, Will is shot and has only a few weeks left before dying.
His wife Evelyn (R.Hall) and his best friend Max Waters (P.Bettany) upload Will's consciousness into the computer before his death, Max is scared, unsure if it's really his friend or just an A.I he runs away and is captured by the RIFT who wants him to stop Will.
Rebecca and Will are going to settle a whole facility in a small town, hoping to develop what they want without being bothered by R.I.F.T, but some of his former coworkers and the FBI start to wonder what Will is going to do with his power groing and having access to everything, every piece of information and developing new technologies.
Is humanity ready to accept the Transcendance and make the next step of evolution, or is it going to far ?
My impressions :
+ The casting. Always loved Depp and Freeman and it's nice to see C.Murphy who doesn't get enough credit in general.
+ The general idea of the movie is interesting, we live in a world where technology keeps improving and the question of a point where it will go to far is interesting.
+ What Will can do with nanotechnology : healing/enhancing bodies gives shows a positive side of new technologies where some other movies would have just been like "fuck that, it's going to control us all and machines will rule the world". Also the way they move around the world looks cool.
+ The ending.
- Starting with a scene in the future only to throw us back showing how things became like that. I understand it can be easier from a narrative point of view but it's useless. Other movies do that to (ex: American Hustle) and in general it bothers me because it cutting the pace of the movie.
- Will is a man's consciousness into a machine, he know emotions but still he talks with a monotone voice and blank face like some kind of robot from a 70's futuristic movie. He has plans, he loves his wife we are supposed to feel excited for him when he shows his new technologies, we should feel sorry for him because he can see his wife but can't touch but we don't care because it looks like nothing matters for him because of that voice/face.
- Slow paced. The topic is interesting, but at times the movie is boring sometimes.
To conclude, i'm mixed about this movie. It has good ideas that could be interesting to any viewer but on the other hand, there are issues like Will's blankness and how slow it is at times and this is going to be difficult to watch for some people.
If you're unsure wether to go watch it or not, i would advise you to not go and wait for the dvd release but if the topic interests you i won't discourage you to go.
It's a movie i want to like, but i can't really defend it because of all that's wrong in it, i can't trash it either because i found it interesting.
