As reported several times, The Rock is expected to end CM Punk's lengthy reign as WWE Champion at the Royal Rumble in January. It seems that winning the title will come at a bigger price.
At one point, the Rock was expected to make only 3 appearances in 2013, with Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 29 being two of them. WWE Management were content to let this happen, even though this would mean that the WWE Championship would be inactive for 3 months leading into WM29. But after internal pressure from several roster members, including CM Punk, Management have negotiated a better course of action.
The Rock is now expected to appear at a minimum of 3 Raw shows in January. Will he does not need to wrestle at any of them, this guarantees that he will appear at least once before the Royal Rumble and once immediately after. It is likely that the third appearance will be at the 20th anniversary of Raw. And the Rock is expected to compete at Elimination Chamber too. There is some speculation that Rock will be defending the WWE Championship in one of the two Elimination Chamber matches. But it is far more likely that he will be teaming with Cena against CM Punk and another heel in a tag team match.
The WWE are trying to negotiate more appearances out of him. It needs to be said that the Rock winning the title is not set in stone. There is also a concept that either Brock Lesnar or John Cena will cost Rock the match. Or Punk could lose the title to Ryback or John Cena before the Rumble, and then Punk would cost Rock the match. The least likely scenario is that Punk will defend the title clean against Rock.
