As previously reported, Jake Roberts recently blew a comeback by appearing at his first show intoxicated. Various sources are now suggesting that Roberts' actions were both planned and the result of poor health.
Roberts, who is currently 53 years old, is currently in training for one last run in professional wrestling. His efforts are being recorded for a new documentary series.
Roberts has battled drug and alcohol addition throughout his career, in addition to poor physical conditioning and weight problems. Over the last 10 years, Roberts has been in multiple rehab programs. He has also alienated himself from very many independent promoters because of his habit of turning up to shows intoxicated.
The conditions of his training include total abstinence from all drugs (unless prescribed and approved in advance by a hand-chosen physician). He is allowed to drink, but he is not allowed to get drunk. And he must continue with his DDP YOga! program, and training. Any violations will result in an end to the deal. And likely involuntary retirement. He is drug and alcohol tested twice a week.
Roberts claims that the promoter agreed to move his pre-main event match to much earlier in the card. The original script called for his opponent, Johnny Blade, to cut a promo on Roberts, and then they battled in the second-to-last match. The script was not changed on paper, only by word of mouth. The new script called for Roberts to interrupt the promo and beat down Blade in a very fast match WITHOUT his DDT finisher. The reason for the change is because the promoter agreed to let Roberts leave early to be with his children. Roberts explains that his limited physical ability was the result of poor physical health and old age.
At this point, he has not violated the conditions of his comeback. But the promoter is said to be very angry with Roberts.
