Before the movie :
I didn't want to watch this movie for several reasons :
- First i can't stand Miles Teller, i know it's a stupid reason but i can't stand his face which is why i had no sympathy for his previous characters and i didn't know why it would be different here.
- And second the whole advertisement & every critics praising the movie, i don't know there's something i find repulsive in the lack of negative things.
But 4 friends of mine saw this movie and told me i had to watch it, that it gave them shivers down the spine and a big slap in the face so i gave it a chance.
Movie Plot :
Andrew, 19 years old, wants to be one of the best Jazz drummers, to do so he wants to join Terrence Fletcher's band.
The Conductor accepts him as an alternate to his actual drummer but he will reveal himself a real jerk, insulting, slapping and morally abusive. He wants excellence and no mistakes are allowed.
How much can a boy take to fulfill his dream ?
My impressions :
+ J.K Simmons, he plays an asshole and he plays it well. He has the face, the voice, the gesture, everything to play the violent and abusive teacher. Also, this gave more impact to the moment where he shows some emotions.
+ Only 1h47mn.
- Meet Andrew, a 19 years old pretentious little prick. If i could slap him through the screen i would have done it.
- I expected it to be showing at least something different from the jazz world. I don't know much about it but all i saw in the movie were unbearable guys thinking they were so smart and know real music...Sorry Lisa Simpson and almost all clichés i know about Jazz people showed this.
- The love story and how it turns out is stupid and makes Andrew even more despicable.
- The ending. I thought it was going to end like this but at one point the movie tricked me to almost BOlieve it wasn't so predictable, well it was...have your dumb ending folks (don't want to spoil). If the movie stopped 10 minutes before it could have saved it a little for me.
To conclude, you would have guessed by now, I hated it and won't recommend it.
It could have been an interesting way to initiate people to Jazz, it's not.
It could have had an interesting plot around the abusive/abused relation between Fletcher and Andrew, it's not.
I came to the point where i decided to watch it in a perverse perspective, enjoying how awful Fletcher is with the band.
I find it hard to root for a character when he is neither likeable nor interesting nor funny and the ending made that smartass so much more unlikeable to me.
Maybe i'm too dumb to understand the movie, but this was painful to watch for me and i won't watch it again.

Between Jupiter Ascending and Whiplash, 2015 movies start on the wrong track for me. If i don't have any problem, the next movie i'll see is Birdman, i hope it will be good.
