Rumours that the man responcible for the mistake at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony was murdered are fake.

The story went viral today after first being posted on The Daily Currant. The fake news website is a satire parody of genuine news websites. It frequently posts fictional stories with the sole intent of making them go viral on social media. This was one of the bigger successes.

The truth behind the story relates to the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. At a pivotal point during the show, five snowflakes were supposed to open into the Olympic ring logo. However, one of the five snowflakes did not open. The mechanical failure made headlines all over the world and became the main talking point of the ceremony. This was particularly embarrassing as a representative for the games mocked the Summer Games opening ceremony in London just 2 hours before this ceremony began.

The fake story claimed that a technican called T. Borris Avdeyec was found dead in his hotel room after the technical failure. It said that he was found with multiple stab wounds all over his body and police did not suspect foul play. A fictional investigating officer allegedly remarked that the victim could have "fallen onto a set of knives", and accidents happen when you make mistakes that embarrass Russia.

In reality, these games have already been steeped in controversy. Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced a new law preventing people from teaching children under 18 about homosexuality. Anyone caught doing so can be imprisoned. Putin has also butted heads with United States President Barack Obama on several occasions recently. Putin has remarked that the US Government secretly spying on people gives them no grounds to comment on how Russia treats civilians.
