The Divas Championship was introduced to be a women's title exclusive to the SmackDown brand.
Up until then, the WWE Women's Championship was open to both brands, with the champion being allowed on both shows. But the champion tended to remain on Raw. When the Women's Championship was merged into the Divas Championship, these old traditions resumed.
The point of the Divas Championship was to make the idea of non-wrestlers winning the title more socially acceptable. Most of the title-holders so far were swimsuit models when the signed with the WWE.
Title Trivia:
So far, there have been 15 different Divas that have held the title.
Eve Torres has held the title 3 times.
Maryse holds the record for most time spent as champion, reaching 260 days.
The title was once defended under Freebird Rule. Michelle McCool and Layla held the title as a team. When Layla won the Women's Championship, she declared McCool to be her co-champion. McCool briefly became the sole champion just long enough to win a title unification match. After McCool became the undisputed Divas champion, she too declared Layla as her co-champion. This came to an end when Natayla beat them both in a handicap match.
Jillian Hall's reign as champion lasted only a few minutes.
Only 4 people have held the title more than once; Maryse, Melina, Michelle McCool and Eve Torres. Technically, Layla's first reign does not count due to McCool appointing her a co-champion.
Only 3 champions are not from the United States. Maryse and Natayla are Canadian, while Layla is British.
