WWE Hall Of Famer Pat Paterson has publicly admitted that he is gay... roughly 15 years after the news went public.

The announcement was supposed to be the "surprise ending" to the Legends' House series on the WWE Network. This isn't a spoiler because 73-year-old Paterson was already publicly out.

The first Intercontinental Champion has been plagued with rumours that he was gay. He openly denied this until 1999. Many former employees have accused Paterson of homosexual harassment and blackmail. He was briefly released from the WWE in the early '90's after a former employee sued him and 2 other agents for sexual harassment. Paterson was cleared after the court ruled that there was no evidence of his involvement, despite declaring one of the others guilty. Around that time, his supporters stopped hiding his sexuality to let people know that they knew about him and had no issues with it.

In 1999, Paterson stopped denying rumours that he was gay. He had been involved with multiple angles in which he leered over and groped some of the Divas. Friends took the angle to be the WWE trying to hide his sexuality. Paterson began to feel the same way, so he started portraying a character that didn't like women (in any context). He just presumed that his sexuality was common fact.

A few wrestlers, including Bret Hart, have received criticism for making homophobic jokes about Paterson, despite being friends with him. Several others, like Ahmed Johnson, continue to make claims that they were sexually harassed by Paterson.

Darren Young briefly grabbed media attention last year when he admitted he was gay. This made Young the first openly gay WWE Superstar. Paterson never had a moment where he admitted on television that he was gay. It is very likely that he was asked to come out to give Legends' House a surprise for the final episode. In the same way, Tyson Kidd and Natalya Neidhart were told to keep their marriage a secret so that their wedding could become a surprise for Total Divas. Similarly, both Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan were pressured into proposing to their girlfriends for the show. Orton would break up with his girlfriend, while Bryan went ahead with the proposal. Bryan recently married Brie Bella.
