I'm taking a step back from No Mercy all together, so updates on this project will not come from me.
My decision is based on the general build up of distaste for the No Mercy community. People bickering over textures and creating "wars" between forums. People who believe that hacks fall from the sky and want everything to be spoon fed to them. People who've been active for a long time and only stir up shit and don't even contribute. And then the others who treat this game beyond a hobby and their obsession overflows in their posting. I'm not singling anyone out and not saying everyone fits the bill. There are some good guys around here, contributing, helping, and having fun. At the end of the day, it's an 11 year old game with a fanbase of about 20 people circulating the forums. You'll have to get updates from Anthology. It's his project.
That is actually quite understandable, I probably even helped with this one, sadly.
The schizophrenic mindset of the No Mercy community has been infamous even before I joined any of these forums. I was warned by plenty of people about the circumstances surrounding it, and for awhile, I even let myself get swept away in it. Quite unforunate.
I think there are a few reasons why the No mercy community has come to a snail crawl of sorts, lately. The first is the trouble many people have to go through just to PLAY the game itself, you must swim in the sea of the elitists that don't seem to actually WANT anybody else to play the game. I don't understand it in the slightest, now, this doesn't mean that I'm not going to respect their wishes when it comes to using their work, but it sure means I'm going to and have approached my own personal work in a different fashion.
I figure, since I like this game so much (still on my top ten list, hell, me and my buddys still get 4-player modded No Mercy going on the weekends), I'll probably keep coming back to it, but for awhile a lot of people soured me on it due to the mindset that "this is OUR game". I don't like that, why work on a game hack/mod, if you don't want others to use it? Since I enjoy No mercy so much, I want as many people possible playing the game, that way, mayhap we'll get some new blood in the hacking/modding scene, and get even more new players that are just frankly grateful for the people that keep breathing new life into this game.
The whole texture argument is one of the oldest and most tiresome of the entire thing, to be honest. Though I don't use other people's textures (at least for the stuff I release) out of respect of the wishes of the original creators, in other modding communities it seems to be quite the opposite. Modders and hackers almost seem happy when other people add on or create their own edits and release them. I hope to see a bit more of that here in the future.
The forums wars? I do not understand them. We've had differences between a couple admins to another forum, but as far as I know, we never let that effect our members. I've actually had PMs from members concerning both forums, asking what I think they should do because they are recieving PMs from staff saying inane things like boycott this place. I tell them all the same thing: "Don't stop going there, please don't stop coming here". I'm 28, I don't have time to let it go to waste concerning myself with what someone else is doing on the damn internet.
I'm hoping that with our "come one, come all noobs" attitude that we've been trying to push here, No Mercy will get that strong, healthy fanbase it truly deserves.
Thanks for your hard work on this one, Blitz, this save is still one of the most anticipated things I've seen come down No Mercy's pike. :hi
