The WWE website has reprinted their list of the Worst 20 moments in WCW. You will notice that all of them happened between 1998 and 2000 (when Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo were in control).

It is also worth noting how the WWE has copied many of these in some way since WCW closed down.

20. Sting took on Rick Steiner at the Great American Bash in 1999. Rick led Sting backstage, where he was ambushed by Tank Abbott. Once Sting bested Abbott, he found Rick waiting alongside his brother and former tag team partner, Scott Steiner. The Steiner then set two Dobermans on Sting. They simply started tugging on rags that suddenly appeared on Sting’s glove and boot.

19. In 1998, an unknown person had been trying to drive Hollywood Hogan insane with a collection of supernatural tricks, including demonic possession. On the 5th October Nitro, Hogan finally saw who was behind these stunts. A quick lighting change showed the Ultimate Warrior standing in the next room, on the other side of the mirror. Hogan could clearly see Warrior, as could the announcers, live audience and viewers. But for some reason, Eric Bischoff could not see anyone else there. Amazingly, the point of this stunt WAS NOT to reveal Warrior.

18. For some reason, WCW decided to completely repackage the Raven character. They presented Raven as a kid with a trust fund who never grew out of his rebellious teen phase. His mother convinced Chris Kanyon to befriend Raven. Raven later took his new friend out for a shopping spree at Versace (driving a yellow Ferrari).

17. Martial artist Jerry Flynn decided to make the boiler room of every arena that Nitro broadcast from “his domain”. Dubbed ‘The Block’, it would play host to a lot of boilerroom brawl and hardcore matches, as well as a lot of other crazy events.

16. WCW also ran a spin-off game show called ‘Battle Dome’. It was similar to ‘American Gladiators’. Just as the show was beginning to take off, WCW tried to boost ratings further by having a cross-brand feud. Some of WCW’s mid-card heels feuded with the Battle Dome warriors (who were all heels).

15. ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, after 2 decades of playing an American patriot, suddenly joined Team Canada. He completely changed his look, even removing his trademark long hair and beard. He was kicked out of Team Canada very soon thereafter.

14. Jeff Jarrett and Booker T battled for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in a ‘San Francisco 49ers’ match. There was a pole in each corner with a wooden box suspended from it. The first person to get hold of the title belt, hidden within one of the boxes, would become the champion. The other boxes included useless items like one glove, or a framed picture of Scott Hall. At the end of the match, the box just fell open when Booker T grabbed hold of it. Ring announcer David Penzer picked up the title belt and handed it to Booker T. By the rules of the match, Penzer was the new champion. But WCW pretended that this never happened. Wish we all could.

13. Writer Ed Ferrera decided to start mocking Jim Ross’ affliction with Bells’ Palsy by creating a parody character. Named Oklahoma, the overweight man with no in-ring experience would defeat Madusa for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. He was later stripped of the title because he exceeded the maximum weight limit. But this was the case before the match ever happened, so why was he allowed to even compete for the title.

12. During his stint as WCW President, Ric Flair was put into a mental hospital. He wore his ring robe for every segment. He eventually returned with some of the other “patients” in tow.

11. The Mayhem 2000 pay-per-view had a surprise match added to the show. Manager Jimmy Hart challenged radio personality DJ Mancow Muller. It ended quickly and was never mentioned again.

10. The Main Event of Hallowe’en Havoc 1999 was Hulk Hogan vs WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting. Hogan went to the ring in his everyday clothes, said something to Sting, and let Sting pin him. The fans were not given any kind of explanation.

9. Bash At The Beach 1999 had a hardcore battle royal, held in an actual junkyard.

8. Buff Bagwell once had a genuine argument with Vince Russo during a live Nitro broadcast. When it was time for his match against La Parka, Bagwell refused to get into character. He walked to the ring and tried to chain wrestle La Parka. He then suddenly told La Parka to kick him in the head and pin him. The second the match ended, Bagwell jumped to his feet. He then took Bobby Heenan’s headset and criticised Russo’s booking, live on air.

7. The WCW Commissioner Mike Sanders created the ‘Minnesota Massacre Match’ to punish Kwee Wee and Big Vito. But the rules were never explained. It looked like a 3-on-2 handicap elimination match. It was implied that an elimination would occurd when someone was knocked down and could not answer a Referee’s 10 count (just like in a Last Man Standing Match). But for some reason, Kevin Nash and DDP replaced Kwee Wee and Vito. Then they were declared the winners, even though no-one got eliminated.

6. ‘Nasty Boy’ Brian Knobbs’ final WCW match was a 3-way, tag team, hardcore match. Knobbs was written out of the company when Meng threw him off a balcony. Knobbs was never mentioned again.

5. WCW celebrated Silkk the Shocker’s birthday by hiring little-known rapper Master P, paying him a huge amount of money. The live Atlanta audience had no idea who the New Orleans based rapper was, or why he needed 2 dozen entourage members with him. Curt Hennig, who had a country singer gimmick, interrupted the party on his own. Fans simply did a head count and presumed that Hennig was the good guy. Especially after Silkk and P insulted him and threw the cake in his face. Believing the rappers to be heels, the fans started booing them. Master P later suggested that the reason why they were booed was because the Atlantan audience were racist.

4. In April 2000, Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo decided to reboot the company. The publicly vacated all of the championships. When Bischoff tried to get the WCW World Championship from Sid Vicious, he made a sick joke about “scissors”… twice. He was referring to an incident 8 years before when Vicious stabbed Arn Anderson with a pair of scissors. But no-one in the audience knew what he was referring to. Then followed a weary-some storyline in which the younger wrestlers (including Jeff Jarrett) defeated the older stars for all of the titles. Except the WCW Hardcore Championship, which went to Terry Funk.

3. WCW reformed the nWo in 1999 with Bret Hart, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett. One night, they spray painted and attacked Sid Vicious’ rental car. Then they beat him up. And then they put him into the rental car, and Bret Hart ran over the vehicle with a monster truck.

2. Brian Knobbs introduced a new wrestler called The Dog. But Dog actually thought he was a dog. He needed to be kept on a chain, repeated attacked referee Scott Dickinson (who was also a mailman), and drank out of a toilet. He was written out when Knobbs took him for a car ride and abandoned him in the desert.

1. In March 2000, there was a $500,000 bounty placed on Hulk Hogan’s head. While Hogan was in the ring talking about the bounty, he saw a new challenger intent on collecting it. Now, this person was not in the arena. It was an open top venue, and the challenger was standing on top of a tall building. Hogan saw him, and dared the man to take up the challenge. But the building was over a mile away from the arena, but Hogan, who was wearing sunglasses, could still make out that it was The Wall.

Classic WWE. Re-writing history.

The Oklahoma character actually first appeared on Raw, while Ed was still with the company.

No Shockmaster, Robocop or Ding-Dongs? Pfffft.

Apparently nothing ever happened in the company when Vince Russo wasn't there!

You know what's funny? None of these things are as horrible as Katie Vicki.

Not really, to be honest. At least, not in the United States. Shit, I live in Montana and he was a big deal. I think the spin belittled his drawing power.

Of course Atlanta didn't like him. It's fucking Atlanta.

That is almost exactly what Master P said afterwards.

Go to Atlanta, it won't take long. An hour or two, tops. That place is a dirty, crime-filled city. Even waiting at the bus stop can be a bitch, sometimes.
