British TV show Videogame Nation has compiled a list of the Worst 5 Wrestling games ever released on console.
Videogame Nation is an independent production made by a small group of gamers with a low budget. It airs in the same channel and segment as episodes of TNA Impact! and WrestleTalk TV. The show focuses mainly on the negative aspects of videogames. Each show begins with one of the main hosts running down a list of 5 terrible games.
#5. – TNA Impact!
The only TNA based video game released onto consoles so far. It is also the very first wrestling game to have downloadable content. The main story mode was based around Suicide, who was a fictional character at the time. Suicide would later appear on TNA programming and go on to win the TNA X-Division Championship twice. However, Suicide made his debut several months after the game was released and had tanked. The review did not really give any reasons why the game was so bad.
#4. – WWF In Your House
This game was basically Mortal Kombat featuring WWE superstars. This game featured supernatural special moves and unique stages. No arenas, as all of the rings where in specially themed locations based on each of the in-game characters. For example, there was one Hallowe’en themed level called ‘Undertaker’s Crypt’.
#3. – WWF Betrayal
A strange side-scrolling game in which you must punch and kick your way through an army of henchmen. The aim was to rescue Mr. McMahon’s daughter Stephanie, and be rewarded with a match for the WWF Heavyweight Championship. Even though you could play as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and The Undertaker, all of the characters looked similar. The game would have done better if it was released for more consoles that just the GameBoy Colour.
#2. – WCW Backstage Assault
The entire game took place within the backstage areas. There was no ring in any level. While the game has most of the WCW roster at the time, the graphics were poor and blocky. The general gameplay was very stiff as well, making it needlessly difficult. To make things worse, WCW closed down a few months after this game was released. This game will always be the final video game of WCW.
#1. – WWF Microleague Wrestling
This is the very first licenced wrestling game made for consoles. So it was the first game to feature characters based on actual wrestlers. However, it was a turn based text game.
