TNA Co-founder Jeff Jarrett has announced his resignation from TNA Wrestling.
Jeff Jarrett started the company with his father in 2002. The company only really got going with the financial backing of the Carter family, and their Panda Energy franchise. It is not yet known if Jarrett will retain his minority share in the company. It is also unknown why he has chosen to leave at this time. The move comes as a particular blow as the company lost over 30 stars this year, and AJ Styles’ current contract has expired.
The true origins of TNA Wrestling actually began in 1999. In his final WWE match, Jeff Jarrett was due to lose the Intercontinental Championship to Chyna, making him the first man to lose a wrestling title to a woman. Jarrett’s WWE contract had expired the day before, and Jarrett worked the match as a free agent. He later charged the WWE an inflated fee for the appearance, incurring Vince McMahon’s wrath. When the McMahon family bought out World Championship Wrestling (WCW), McMahon fired Jarrett publicly on both shows. Jarrett later realised that McMahon owned all of the major television and pay-per-views, so anyone who was on bad terms with McMahon may never appear for a major company again. TNA Wrestling was founded as competition to the WWE, giving those who did not fit the WWE mould a chance to showcase their abilities on television.
Jarrett balanced life as an active full-time roster member as a well as a backstage employee for the first several years. As a part of TNA’s partnerships with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion (AAA) in Mexico and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), Jarrett toured the Northern Hemisphere representing all four companies.
In 2007, Jarrett took his first major leave of absence after his first wife was diagnosed with cancer. He returned once it looked like she had made a full recovery, but then took more time off when it she died suddenly from the illness. When he returned this time, he engaged in a highly-emotional feud with real-life rival Kurt Angle, who had made a lot of disrespectful comments about Jarrett’s family crisis.
Jarrett was suspended indefinitely by TNA President Dixie Carter in 2009 after it emerged that Jarrett had asked his then girlfriend to move in with him. She was Karen Angle, the ex-wife of then TNA World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle. This prompted Carter to make the disastrous decision of bringing in Hulk Hogan as a business partner. Jarrett’s personal life would be exploited on television for the next 2 years before being “firedâ€. He would continue to represent TNA with new deals in AAA, Wrestle-1 (in Japan) and TNA’s own Ring Ka King in India. He had been working as an agent for the last few months as Hulk Hogan’s contract expired. His return to television had been hinted at for several months, but is clearly not happening now.
UPDATE: Jarrett's departure has been made official by TNA Wrestling. He will officially be a free agent on the 6th of January. Jarrett will be keeping his share in the ownership of TNA. TNA have taped all of their shows until the middle of January, so it can be taken for granted that Jarrett has already made his last appearance. Also, he was never scheduled to be a part of the upcoming UK tour. It is probably not relevant, but Eric Bischoff's contract expires on January 4th.

On behalf of TNA, we would like to thank Jeff for his contributions to the Company. We wish him the very best and look forward to his continued participation as an investor in TNA Wrestling.
