I saw somebody wanting to make a No Mercy wiki and thought it'd be a good idea to throw together all the useless trivia I knew into one topic. Feel free to comment more. Here goes:
Glitches -
The infamous Data glitch: Most of the 1st generation copies of no mercy sold in the US had an issue where the game data would intermittently delete itself. This issue was fixed in a later released 2nd generation of cartridges.
The cage match: there was a glitch in the AI that made them nearly invincible when climbing over the cage.
Royal Rumble title match: When a championship belt is being contested in a royal rumble, the belt will end up vacated once the match is complete (therefore defeating the purpose of making it a title match)
Fun Facts and removals -
Steven Richards in the WWF title run - as unusual as it seemed, Richards would show up alot in the WWF title picture during championship mode. This was due to the request by the WWF to remove the Big Show from the game later in development. It's said that Richards was the character model they worked on after the Big Show was finished, and Richards simply fell into Big Show's spot in Championship mode. You can make the connection when you compare the WWF Championship mode to Big Show's royal rumble storyline from the year 2000.
Any trace of Big Show's character model, including his face, weren't deleted. They were just made inaccessible. The same can be said for rock's eyebrow face as well. Big Show's character portrait however was overwritten by Richards.
Other things that were removed include the "Records" screen (which was in the instruction manual), and Smackdown mall discounts that were granted by earning special tokens.
The developers of the game were big Kenta Kobashi fans. The "create a wrestler" defaults to face 68, which is known to belong to Kobashi in several guides. On top of this, despite being labelled as "S" powered, the Strong Lariat and Burning Hammer (two of Kenta Kobashi's KNOWN finishers) were actually stronger than other "S" powered finishers, such as the Stone Cold Stunner and the Pedigree. This is proven when looking through the game's code using a cheating device/memory editor. That being said, Bradshaw has the most powerful finisher in the default roster.
There was supposed to be a WWF no mercy for the Gameboy Color. This game got scrapped, but the original intention was to make it compatible with the Nintendo 64 version via Transfer pak. The player would create a wrestler on the gameboy, transfer the wrestler to the N64, and use him for the "gameboy color mode", which was a specific storyline made just for this feature. This storyline got pulled from the final release, but is accessible via hacking. The english is a bit messy, but the story was fully playable. Other exploits can be found via the transfer pak menu once hacked. There are 25 hidden character movesets deep inside No Mercy, mostly japanese wrestlers with the exception of Raven and the Big show. These movesets all came with their own AI, but the appearance, profile and rivalries werent set. Yes, Kenta Kobashi was included in this list.
There are more reversal sets than no mercy will lead you to believe. HEEL and JR Heavyweight never made it to the final game but are accessible via hacking. Ken Shamrock comes with the JR heavyweight reversal set, which makes him unique to the rest of the roster.
On top of that, quite a few graphics from AKI's previous title, Japan's Virtual Pro Wrestling 2, are still in no mercy. These graphics include weapons, the SPECIAL sign, the DANGER sign, some kanji, and a few other things. Anyone who's spent a decent amount of time playing VPW2 will know actually HOW much was removed from No Mercy before release. (hint: it was a lot)
There are 3 different pins you can do in a match, standing at your opponents head, legs or midsection. Covering the opponents head is a weak pin that can easily be kicked out of, but yields the lowest chance for a rope break. The pin done at the torso is a cover with a medium success rate, but the most effective is the pin done at the opponents feet. This pin hooks the leg for an effective cover.
That's all I got for now.
