As noted last night, conservative website InfoWars.com, owned by noted conservative radio host Alex Jones, blasted WWE's Zeb Colter character for portraying Tea Party members as racist xenophobes. FOX News and Breitbart.com have joined the site in ripping WWE for the character.
On The Five on FOX News, the panel spent five minutes bashing WWE and coming up with wrestling names. Greg Gutfeld said that he thought Monday Night RAW was "sushi night at Bob's place," and that if he wants to see two men wrestle, he'll "watch the art films" he made with Greg Jarrett in the '90s. He later wondered if Ann Coulter could sue the company for defamation of character, since Zeb's last name comes from the Republican political commentator. We had video of the segment included in this article, however FOX News has since removed the footage from their site.
Breitbart.com wrote, "It's hard to imagine a bigger PR blunder. Expect a mea culpa any minute now."
As noted earlier, WWE issued the following statement to The Hollywood Reporter regarding the character:
"WWE has a long history of creating fictional characters that serve as either protagonists or antagonists, no different than other television shows or feature films. To create compelling and relevant content for our audience, it is important to incorporate current events into our storylines. WWE is creating drama centered on a topical subject that has varying points of view to develop a rivalry between two characters. This storyline in no way represents WWE's political point of view. One should not confuse WWE's storytelling with what WWE stands for, similar to other entertainment companies such as Warner Bros., Universal Studios or Viacom."[/quote]
