JBL's "Lawler" comment explained

On this week's episode of SmackDown, JBL made an obscure reference to Jerry 'The King' Lawler during a Dolph Ziggler match.

<blockquote class='quote\\_blockquote'><dl><dt>JBL</dt><dd> </dd></dl><div>
"Glad that's not Jerry Lawler!"
[/quote]

JBL made the comment as Ziggler hit Dean Ambrose with a series of heavy elbow drops. This was reference to an interview that Lawler conducted the day before the taping.

Lawler said in an interview that his heart attack was caused "in small part" by Ziggler. Lawler was in a tag team match against Ziggler a few weeks before he collapsed. During this match, Ziggler hit Lawler with an identical series of elbow drops. Lawler was unhappy with how much force Ziggler was putting into the attack, as much of Ziggler's weight was landing on Lawler's chest.

Lawler later spoke with a doctor and asked if the way Ziggler performed his elbow drops were dangerous. The doctor agreed, stating that a series of blows like that could knock your heart out of rhythm. Lawler had said that he had been suffering from chest pains for weeks leading up to his heart attack.

Ziggler was not punished or told to change anything due to this revelation. In reality, Ziggler's elbow drops were a minute contributor to Lawler's collapse. Lawler's age and weight, combined with years of travelling and in-ring performance, are much bigger reasons for the heart attack.

Lawler claims that he has asked Vince McMahon to do "1 or 2 more matches". Regardless of his health, Lawler may never be medically cleared by a WWE doctor. A new ruling determines that any wrestler who has had a heart attack may not be allowed to compete in the ring. While Vince McMahon and Ric Flair have not had heart attacks, they are banned from competing for similar reasons.

(And yes, they are trying to get Stone Cold Steve Austin to do one more match).

Why would you even get a grown ass man like Lawler to wrestle other young wrestlers like Ziggler?

Because Lawler is a veteran who is still massively over with fans. Younger wrestlers could learn a lot from being in a ring with someone like Lawler, and they will get further established as a heel.

But I get your point. The risks outweigh the potential benefits. Lawler could do more for a young wrestlers career at the commentary table, or as an adviser.

I'm really not interested in what happens to Lawler, I never liked him when he thought he was 'cool' coming to ECW in the stupid King gimmick, and I still don't like him now. He's an overall jerk, I know this from being near him at a UK based PPV.

Hell they even did a show up the street from my house back when I was 17 at the armoury and I was flat busted broke and walked up the street to see if I could like help set things up to get into the show. I was told I would have to come back and talk to Lawler in an hour. Long story short I would up helping him set up the ring just us two and got in.

One thing I will never forget from that day was attaching the ropes and he told me to lift the up so he could connect them to the corners. Well I raised them up to fast and proceeded to him right square in the nuts HARD. He drops to his knees in the corner and I am right ready to run, because my first thought was he is going to kick my ass.

(Earlier the socket wrench had slipped and hit him there as well)

But all he did was roll around n the ring and say "Everyone is after my nuts today"

Austin is smart and does not need the money. However, Austin vs Punk match? HELL YEAH!

Oh yeah, I remember Austin mentioning that. Hell, the amount of Red Bull he drank was too damn high. Now he won't even touch them.

When you're a young chap, you tend not to notice or pick up on those kinds of things - the interest is in the superstars. But as I got older and looked back, I was shocked at just how uncomfortable being around him I would be now.

I know from personal talks with Justin Credible, that a large chunk of the ECW originals do not like Jerry Lawler for these exact reasons and probably more I would imagine. I know New Jack despises him, that's probably common knowledge though.

Oh well, each to their own I suppose!

You could be right Meh about when I was younger who knows? But my experiences with meeting Jerry over the past 30 years has always been pleasant, the last time I saw and talked to him at a show was about 2 years ago and he was the same as when I first met him when I was younger.

But like you said to each his own I suppose. I know over the years as a fan, training years ago before getting hurt and it ended for good, or the guys I met after getting married to my second wife who is high school friends with Petey Williams, I have met a lot of good guys and a lot of complete pricks.

He's won more World Titles than any other wrestler in history. You don't have to like Jerry lawler, but dammit if he hasn't earned some damn respect and his namesake.

The only two major titles to ever elude him are the two in WWE.

edit: I can't type.

It amazes me that with the pre-WWE legacy he has, and then his WWE tenure, that he got so few matches for the WWE Championship. I think his 2 matches against the Miz were all of them. And his WrestleMania match against Michael Cole was his only ever WM match.

I dont touch any of those energy drinks. I remember when I had one my heart was racing so fast I started to get panicky and thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Honestly had no idea Austin was addicted to that stuff.

I saw him wrestle Bret Hart for the title in Evansville, Ind at a house show once. one of the best shows I have ever been to.

The list of legends that night that were there blew my mind.

The only person that wasn't there that night was Owen & he was supposed to be but was hurt the night before & could not make it.
