Here is the latest update on the talks between WWE and CM Punk. Those of you thinking that it is all a work, then I have some bad news...
The word is that Vince McMahon has not spoken with Punk in over a fortnight. The WWE are waiting for Punk to respond to them. But as each day goes past, McMahon is less and less interested in reaching a deal.
It seems that Punk made a deal to return, but the McMahons and Triple H were not happy with it. Basically, it involved giving Punk a major high-profile match at WrestleMania, and then a major high-profile feud to see him into retirement in the Summer. But he does not want any member of the Authority to be involved with either. He has stopped requesting to main event a WrestleMania and is accepting that it may never happen.
When Punk's last contract was set to expire, Punk was angry that his final match would be used to put over WWE Champion John Cena. At the time, Cena had just won the WWE Championship and had a guaranteed main event spot at the next WrestleMania XXVIII against The Rock, which was still almost a year away. Punk preferred to put over someone who was not already the heaviest pushed star in the company. Punk has become very aware that if he did retire this year, then he would finish his career by putting over Triple H or Randy Orton. This would be pointless as, like Cena, they are 2 of the biggest stars of the last decade.
Many higher ups within the WWE find it insulting that Punk does not want to work with Triple H. They all, including Triple H himself, believe that facing Triple H is a huge deal. However, most of the roster do not feel this way, but do not want to say so now that Triple H is one of their employers. The roster feels that only The Undertaker can take several months off between matches, and still have them mean something. This also applies to The Rock, Batista and Brock Lesnar. The roster would be happier about working with them if they were around more often.
On a similar note, the locker room does not resent Rob Van Dam or Chris Jericho in the same way. Both men have worked full-time schedules when they were in the company, and were content to work on the mid-card and earn their way to the main event spot. Batista does work a full-time schedule, but he competes considerably less often than other stars.
Management now views Punk as spoiled. They believe that they helped Punk to make a lot of money, and now he is refusing to return the favour. This is why an increasing number of Raw segments have had indirect remarks towards Punk.
For what it is worth, Stephanie McMahon is said to be the most openly angry with Punk. If Triple H and Vince McMahon are angry, then they have been hiding it a lot better than Stephanie has tried to.
