Jim Ross has announced his retirement from WWE.
“Good Ol’ J.R.†has worked for numerous professional wrestling companies throughout his entire adult life, including the American Wrestling Alliance (AWA) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW). For the last 20 years, he has been in numerous roles within the WWE. But he will be best remembered as the main play-by-play announcer for almost 15 of those years.
Ross was once brought to tears on a live episode of Raw when the fans gave him a standing ovation which lasted several minutes. It came immediately after the announcement that Ross would be inducted in the WWE Hall Of Fame Class of 2007. The producers had to cut to commercials and then get ring announcer Justin Roberts to ask them to quieten down so that they may continue with the show.
J.R. continued working for the company despite suffering two bouts of cerebral palsy while live on air. The condition paralysed one side of his face, and affected his ability to speak and reduced the vision in his eye. As age and illness deteriorated his health, J.R. was slowly moved across lower broadcast positions until he was eventually taken off television altogether.
J.R. occasionally featured in storylines and matches. One of his biggest victories saw him defeat fellow announcer Jonathan Coachman in a “Country Whippin’†strap match to get Jerry Lawler and himself reinstated as the main broadcast team on Raw. Another saw him get the win over the World Tag Team Champions, the Un-Americans (Lance Storm & William Regal) with Jerry Lawler in his hometown. Ross used Regal’s trademark brass knuckles on Regal before getting the pin.
J.R. will also be known for inventing a wide range of catchphrases that would all become his trademark. He used the ‘Oklahoma Fight Song’ of Oklahoma University as his main theme. He also had his own finishing move that fans dubbed the “J.R.-KOâ€. It was a variation of the Stone Cold Stunner which resembled a Diamond Cutter
He is also responsible for bringing in a lot of stars into the company, but may never be credited for doing so. Obvious examples included ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, Mick Foley and ‘Dr. Death’ Steve Williams. But he is also responsible for signing a lot of young talent who were amateur wrestlers, like Jack Swagger, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin.
Ross will continue to run his own brand barbeque sauce company. He will likely continue his blogs on wrestling and college football, but this will only be from the point of view of as a fellow fan.
Vince McMahon thanked Ross for his years of service on Twitter.
