Just a few hours ago, Jim Ross and Vince McMahon confirmed that J.R. had retired from the WWE after 20 years. But now it seems that the decision made by McMahon, and not Ross.
J.R. hosted the Legends Panel at the WWE 2K14 event during SummerSlam weekend. The WWE were not happy with Ric Flair acting up and "taking over" the event. WWE Management were not happy that the focus was taken off the video game, even though the game developers loved it. Ross has taken a lot of flack for not taking control. Many within the WWE felt that Ross would not be with the company for much longer.
Even though J.R. has been faithful to Vince McMahon over the years, they have had a very rocky relationship.
Ross once left the company to have essential surgery. His departure was marked with a segment in which Vince, Stephanie, Shane and Linda McMahon all took turns to insult him. He was then fired by Linda, and kicked in the crotch by her. One week later, McMahon continued the story line by making a mock video of Ross' surgery. McMahon played a surgeon who removed various items Jim Ross's arse.
McMahon would often mock J.R.'s facial paralysis and loss of sight in one eye on television. He would never tell Ross in advance about these comments. But JR would then have to take to the WWE website or his own personal blogs to defend McMahon.
Mahon has also demoted J.R. at a moments notice for no particular reason. Ross was once demoted from the main announce position to be replaced by the much-younger Mike Adamle. Adamle had become notorious in the company for failing badly in each onscreen role he had been given.
Jim Ross almost quit the company in 2007 when he was suddenly drafted to the SmackDown brand. He only learned of the change when it was announced live on Raw. Michael Cole was drafted to Raw that same night, and has been there sense. Ross would repeatedly be replaced by younger commentators simply because they looked younger.
If Ross' retirement really was forced, it will be a sad end to a legendary career.
