As recently reported, the WWE are said to have bigger plans for Zack Ryder. In fact, they have 2 plans for him. Right now, there are some officials that are lobbying AGAINST pushing Zack Ryder, even though he is one of the most popular stars in the company at this time. Ryder's merchandise is among the strongest selling of all superstars, currently surpassing Randy Orton and Triple H.
The first plan will depend on whether or not the WWE will hire The Big O. Big O starred alongside Ryder in Ryder's own-made YouTube show, 'Z! The True Long Island Story'. If Big O does get hired, and his basic training goes well, then they will soon appear as a tag team on WWE programming (particularly on NXT). The tag team will be strongly based on the Robbie E and Jessie Godderz tag team in TNA Wrestling. If Big O does not get hired, then there is another plan in store for Ryder.
The WWE is said to be keen on Big O because of his large size and physique. Some have noted that he has a similar appearance to Godderz and 'Party' Marty Scurll, but with with larger muscles. However, they are not happy about his character, lack of experience or tattoos. If Big O does get signed, he will likely undergo a big change. Big O owes the launch of his career to Ryder's internet show.
As previously reported, Ryder's more serious attitude and new hairstyle are parts of changes that he has been told to make. When asked on Twitter, Ryder denied that these changes had anything to do with future plans, stating that he simply wanted to grow his hair out (contradicting his claim to "hate having long hair"). It should also be noted that Ryder has toned down his requests for a push on television and social media since he started growing out his hair.
Ryder originally developed the Internet show in a bid to convince the WWE to push him, or release him from his contract. In the first year, Ryder went from a heel jobber, to one of the most popular stars in the company. He finished 2011 with a high-profile win for the WWE United States Championship against Dolph Ziggler. His career plummeted back to enhancement talent in 2012, but he remained consistently popular with WWE audiences.
Ryder was accused of "selling out" when his show was made exclusive to the WWE YouTube channel. Ryder was actually forced to do this, or stop making the show, as WWE owned many copyrights used in the show, including Zack Ryder's name. Ryder would not be paid a single dime for the 48 episodes he made for the YouTube channel. Ryder became frustrated with his lack of TV time and constant re-edits of his show. In the end, Ryder decided to stop with Episode 100.
Ryder recently said in an interview that this year was his "last chance" in the WWE. If he did not make it this year, then that was it. It was not clear if this meant that Ryder would be released, or he planned to leave the company.
