Several websites have incorrectly reported that Rob Van Dam is in trouble with management.
Rob Van Dam’s contract is only valid for 180 days in a single year, in 2 blocks of 90 days. The first block ends on October 1st, but still includes the Battleground pay-per-view. He is expected to return around the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in January, and stay until the following Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
Van Dam was buried on this week’s Raw. Other websites have reported that this is a punishment for not signing a new contract. But this is far from the case. The plan is to weaken Van Dam going into the Battleground pay-per-view. He is due to face World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio in a Hardcore match. Even though Del Rio has a lot of victories in No Holds Barred, Last Man Standing and various caged matches, he still comes across as being at a disadvantage in such environments.
It does not make sense for Del Rio to be on an even level with Van Dam in matches that permit weapons. So Van Dam needs to go into the match with a handicap, e.g. an arm injury which should make him more susceptible to Del Rio’s finisher. With Van Dam about to take some time off, 3 potential story lines are in place to write him off television for a while. None of this means that he will definitely lose to Del Rio, as 2 of the possible outcomes involves him winning the match.
The reason why Van Dam did so poorly against Randy Orton on Raw was simply because Van Dam won the vote. Orton was going to bury whichever opponent was placed before him to help build him as a monster heel. If Van Dam did not win the poll, he was scripted to be attacked by Del Rio in a backstage segment anyway.
