The Chilean Puya chilensis is known as the sheep-eating plant because it does exactly that: It traps sheep in its razor-sharp spines, patiently waits for them to die, then feeds on their rotting carcasses.
One greenhouse-raised Puya chilensis is just days from blooming for the first time in 15 years. "We keep it well fed with liquid fertilizer," horticulturalist Cara Smith said.
"Feeding it on its natural diet might prove a bit problematic." The plant, which is housed in Surrey, England, will have bright yellow flowers that will last for a week. "[It's] well out of reach of both children and sheep," Smith said.
