TNA Wrestling has announced that Taz has left the company.

Both Taz and John Gaburick announced the departure on Twitter this afternoon. It is unknown whether or not Taz had asked to leave, or if he was let go, but both sides are saying that it was mutual. We do know that Taz' contract had actually expired several months ago, and that he had been appearing under a "pay by appearance" arrangement.

Taz had been unhappy in TNA for well over a year. He had often mentioned on Twitter that he didn't plan to be with TNA for much longer. He refused to renew his contract because they wanted him to take a pay cut. The "by appearance" option also meant a reduction in money, but he wasn't losing so much at the time. Since TNA changed how they tape TV shows and PPVs, Taz is used less often and therefore makes even less. He refused to attend commentary tapings because of a dispute over money. TNA had paid for his flight, but he chose not to go. As a result, Josh Matthews recorded the commentary on his own.

Even though Taz pressured TNA into hiring Matthews, they suspected that Taz would not be staying around much longer. He had been asking for increasing amounts of time off, including missing most of the 'One Night Only' PPVs. Another sign involved Taz removing all mention of TNA from his social media accounts. TNA had been testing out Jeremy Borash and Al Snow as potential broadcast partners for Matthews if Taz did leave. It is not known yet if TNA plans to record new commentary for this week's Impact, or if they will retain the Josh-only version. But the current plan is for Snow to join Matthews from next week on. Borash will commentate with Matthews at the ONO PPVs because these have already been taped.

For those who were not aware, TNA now films TV shows without the announce team present. The footage is then edited, and then the announce team records their commentary while watching a playback of the footage. This is then dubbed over the footage before it is broadcast. This means that the announce team are often calling shows from a different town and date from when they happen live.

Taz joined TNA Wrestling after the least subtle departure from WWE possible. Months before his WWE contract was due to expire, Taz announced that he planned to "retire" when it ended. At the same time, Taz had been using friends in TNA to open up negotiations with the company. Once he did leave WWE, he debuted very quickly as Samoa Joe's secret adviser and manager. It was no secret that the original plan was for Taz to join Jeremy Borash on the announce team, and he did so after only a few weeks. He received a lot of criticism for rambling and often not paying attention to what was happening in or around the ring. He would later be assigned to the Aces N Eights stable, even though there were no plans for him to get involved with matches or leave the commentary table. Over his final year, Taz became lazier in his commentary. He would stop talking about his personal experiences in the ring, or with any of the talent outside of story line. Taz had a stipulation in his TNA deal that prevented him from ever working a match or having to take a bump.
