Last night's WWE Tribute to the Troops special on NBC garnered 1.31 million viewers, putting NBC in last place for the timeslot among the major networks.

Viewership was down 38% from last year's episode, which drew 2.1 million viewers.

ABC won the timeslot last night with CMA Country Christmas, with CBS following in second place with an original airing of Made In Jersey. FOX placed third with a rerun of Kitchen Nightmares, which pulled in 1.89 million viewers.[/quote]

I wonder why?

It wasn't like the show was taped over a month ago, with the results and considerable details released online.
It wasn't like they taped the show on U.S. soil instead of in a war zone.
It wasn't like they aired the show on Christmas Sunday, a time when viewership is generally low, and centered primarily around first run specials.
It wasn't like the show was very similar to every TTTT show so far.

Wait... all of these things were true! This year's show had no chance of doing strongly, so the WWE can make their excuses.

Then again...who cares about the ratings? They mean nothing anyways. We have TiVo, web streaming, and all sorts of things that effect ratings.

In this day and age, you should be right. But TV channels still make a huge deal about them. It is the only way they can measure success.

High ratings prove that a lot of viewers watch the channel. So that means companies will pay more to have their products advertised on those channels. If WWE pulls in good ratings, their sponsors will pay more, and bigger companies will invest too.
