Video capture software recommendations?

I wasn’t sure where to post this question, so apologies in advance if I've posted in the wrong section.

What type of video capture software do you guys recommend to record No Mercy gameplay? I’m interested in uploading some gameplay footage, but any software I’ve tried seems to give me pretty poor quality results (choppy animation, bad lagging, etc.).

Admittedly, I’ve only tried freeware, and also, my laptop is really old and not very powerful which I'm sure is an issue, too. Any suggestions on software? Thank to all in advance.

I use fraps.

Like Keson said, use fraps then to turn it into a GIF use VirtualDub.
