The WWE Website is re-running a previous article about Dream Matches that never happened. Here it is below:

#10. CM Punk vs ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage

Why It Is A Dream Match?

‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage was considered one of the most innovative wrestlers of his time. In spite of his large physique, Savage was a gifted high-flyer who relied on a high-paced offence. While this is nothing unusual now, it was thanks to people like Savage that the style did become so popular in the USA. Savage was also known for his flamboyant ring attires, entrance gear. And many of his promos were unforgettable.
One of the younger stars he inspired was CM Punk. Punk occasionally has stars on his ring attire in respect to Savage, and occasionally uses Savage’s finisher. Punk’s style is very different as he relies on wear-down holds and martial arts strikes to beat opponents. But this style has proven to be effective against opponents against high-flying opponents. And Punk is also known for his unforgettable promos.

Why It Never Happened:

When Ted Turner invested in World Championship Wrestling, it gave WCW a much higher budget than the WWE ever had. WCW were able to lure the biggest names in the WWE away with offers of much higher pay. And Savage was one of the people who were tempted to defect from WWE. But Savage was on particularly bad terms with WWE owner Vince McMahon. McMahon was so angry with Savage that he refused to even talk about him for over a decade. When WCW closed down, Savage was unable to return to the WWE due to the bad relationship with McMahon. So this effectively meant that Savage was retired.
Savage had a very short stint in TNA Wrestling at the same time as CM Punk. Savage was one of the biggest names in wrestling, while Punk was half of a lower mid-card tag team. So putting the two in a match made no sense. Punk finally became one of the biggest stars in the WWE during the same month in which Savage died. Essentially, this was not a dream match until after Savage had died.

#9. Cactus Jack vs Dude Love vs Mankind

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Cactus Jack developed a legacy in Japan and ECW as being one of the toughest wrestlers, appearing in some of the world’s most brutal matches. He carried this reputation into WWE. He has also spoken bitterly about Mankind in interviews.
Mankind developed a legacy in the WWE as being one of the toughest wrestlers, appearing in the some of the company’s most brutal matches.
Dude Love had a very short career. While he did have matches against people like Undertaker, Kane and Stone Cold Steve Austin, he did not nearly have the same reputation as Cactus Jack or Mankind did. He was rumoured to have the same toughness and violent streak that the other two had. All three men competed in the 1998 Royal Rumble, but were not in the ring at the same time.

Why It Never Happened:

Cactus Jack, Dude Love and Mick Foley were all the same person. All three characters were portrayed by Mick Foley. This was never actually a secret at any time, so if you did not know this, you have only yourself to blame.

#8. Fabulous Moolah vs Trish Stratus

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Both the Fabulous Moolah and Trish Stratus are considered to be the greatest woman’s wrestler of all time. Trish Stratus won the WWE Women’s Championship 8 times, at one point holding the title for over a year. The Fabulous Moolah once held the title for 27 consecutive years. Moolah’s streak is disputed because she did actually lose the title multiple times during this title reign. But if the title changes were acknowledged, then Moolah is tied for most title wins with Stratus.

Why It Never Happened?

It nearly did. Several times.

Trish Stratus only started learning how to wrestle in 2000, having her first match that year. By this time, Moolah was already 76 years old. Moolah did compete occasionally between 1999 and 2005, but every single one of those matches were awful. Moolah’s advanced aged meant that it was too dangerous for her to receive any offensive manoeuvres. And she had lost the physical ability to perform many simple moves. She was limited to crudely executed snapmares and clotheslines. And due to her legacy, it would have been an insult to have her lose to anyone. Every modern Diva who even challenged her in the 90’s or 00’s took a step back in their careers.

Yes, the WWE had planned to have Moolah and Stratus face off several times during Stratus’ runs as Women’s Champions. But the plan was always dropped due to Moolah’s poor health, and the damage it would do to Stratus’ legitimacy as a champion.

#7. Evolution (Batista, Randy Orton, Ric Flair & Triple H vs Four Horsemen (Arn Anderson, Barry Windham, Ric Flair & Tully Blanchard).

Why Is It A Dream Match:

The Four Horsemen are the single most dominant stable in professional wrestling. No matter who was in the group, the group tried very hard to make sure that they had some of the best in-ring performers in their stable (realistically, Steve McMichael was the only poor wrestler ever inducted into the Four Horsemen). In addition to being talented wrestlers, the group put a high priority on team work. The team leader went after the largest title in the company, and the others did not aspire to outshine him. The designated tag team concentrated on being an unbeatable tag team, and never once thought about their singles careers. One line-up won all three AWA titles in one night.
Every member of Evolution would hold multiple major championships in the WWE, and remained main eventers for years. They lasted for 3 years, which in itself was a major achievement for any stable in the modern era. They rarely lost and dominated the RAW brand in their first three years as a separate brand. Also, they too won all three RAW titles on the same night.

Why It Never Happened:

Because no-one wanted to see it.

Evolution did have a lot of fans, and they still do. But the truth is, they were a blatant copy of the Four Horsemen. Members of the Horsemen had to use their cunning against superior opponents, but could usually pick up clean, hard-fought wins. Members of Evolution had to use outside interference to beat mid-card opponents. If you were in a match against any member of Evolution, you could almost guarantee that you were going to be attacked by at least two other members during the match. And Randy Orton was doing his “Legend Killer” gimmick. No matter how many times you beat Orton in a match, it was a win. But if Orton EVER performed his RKO on you, he “killed your legacy”.

When things looked darkest for the Horsemen, they relied on their manager J.J. Dillion to give them an edge. Evolution had Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff constantly kissing up to Triple H. Evolution never faced a credible threat, and no-one got put over. Evolution never reached the same level of credibility that each incarnation of the Four Horsemen had.

But if this match was to happen, it would be riddled with problems. You would have to decide which four stars would represent the Horsemen. To keep this simple, WWE.com used the line-up of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham and Tully Blanchard. Flair was in every incarnation of the Horsemen, but he also founded Evolution. So he would be on both teams. Anderson was forced to retire in 1999, before Batista or Randy Orton debuted, due to a back injury. Windham was already in poor health, which also forced him to retire in 2004. Blanchard retired in 2005, but would not return to the WWE while JBL is there. And with Triple H due to take over the WWE, he would never accept the match outside of the WWE.

#6. Andre the Giant vs Big Show

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Both Andre and Big Show were the biggest men in wrestling in their eras. Both men have rarely ever been in the ring with someone with similar size or weight to them. In the earliest days of his career, Big Show was The Giant, the alleged son of Andre the Giant. Andre also surprised people with his athleticism and technical ability in Japan. Big Show occasionally surprises opponents with athletic and unorthodox offense. And the true toughness of either man has never been demonstrated.

Why It Never Happened:
Andre the Giant died a few years before Big Show was old enough to legally compete.

Part 2:

#5. Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley & D-Von Dudley) vs Legion of Doom (Road Warrior Animal vs Road Warrior Hawk)

Both the Dudleyz and the Legion of Doom were considered to be the most successful tag teams of all time. The Legion of Doom were never interested in competing in the singles division, allowing them to concentrate on being a dominant tag team. They are also the first tag team to win the AWA, NWA and WWE Tag Team Championships. They also innovated the double team move, becoming the first major tag team to have a specifically designed tag team finisher. They are also well known for their brutal battles with super heavyweight tag teams.
The Dudleyz are the first team to have held the WWE, WWE World, WCW, ECW, TNA and NWA Tag Team Championships. They have held more than 20 titles together. They have battled some of the greatest tag teams of all time, and are well known for being in hardcore matches. They also innovate double team moves, with their tag team finisher possibly being the most feared finisher in history.

Why It Never Happened:

It nearly did on many occasions.

Paul Heyman tried to lure the Road Warriors (Legion of Doom) into ECW with the intention of them facing teams like the Dudleyz. But for unknown reasons, the deal fell through. And when the Dudleyz went to WWE, Vince McMahon repeatedly reached out to the Legion of Doom in hopes of having them face the Dudleyz. Again, there is no known reason why the deal never went through. The LOD did compete against some WWE tag teams, but never the Dudleyz.

After Road Warrior Hawk died in 2003, it obviously meant that the match would never happen. But Road Warrior Hawk has competed against the Dudleyz on numerous occasions with different tag team partners, including Rick Steiner.

#4. Bret Hart vs Kurt Angle (“I Quit” Match)

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Bret Hart is considered one of the greatest submission wrestlers in his era, as well as a gifted technical grappler. He would occasionally surprise opponents and fans with his high-flying ability and no disqualification matches.

Kurt Angle is considered one of the greatest technical wrestlers in his era, as well as a gifted submission specialist. He would frequently surprise opponents and fans with his high-flying ability and hardcore matches.

Hart also once confessed to literally dreaming about being in a match with Kurt Angle. He also alleges that he has NEVER dreamt about being in a match with another wrestler.

Why It Never Happened:

In 1997, Vince McMahon renewed Bret Hart’s contract, for a record breaking 14 years. McMahon quickly regretted it, and pressured Hart into leaving the company. Hart reluctantly accepted a contract with the rival WCW, with the promise that McMahon would hire Hart back once the WWE was in a better financial situation. But then the Montreal Screw Job happened. Hart was already determined to never work with the WWE or McMahon ever again, but Hart also blamed the WWE for his brother Owen’s death in 1999.

Meanwhile, Angle was forced to retire from amateur wrestling after winning the Olympic Gold medal in 1996. Few people wanted to compete against him, and those who did were a little too keen to take him on. And Angle hated professional wrestling, so he was not considering any involvement. Paul Heyman tried to lure him into ECW, and encouraged Angle to view the product for himself. Angle watched a few episodes of WWE Raw and then decided on the career change. After a bad experience during his first appearance at an ECW show, he then accepted a deal with WWE. Angle debuted in November 2000.

Unfortunately, Hart was forced to retire in September 2000 after a head injury. He assumed that he would return eventually, but WCW closed down in 2001 before he had recovered. And he was refusing to work with WWE. In 2002, Hart suffered a stroke before TNA Wrestling truly took off. As a result, Hart’s physical condition was too poor to ever have a proper match again.

#3. Sting vs Undertaker

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Sting is the biggest wrestling superstar to have never competed in the WWE. The biggest icon of WCW and TNA Wrestling has a gimmick that has often been compared to that of the The Undertaker, the icon of the WWE.

Why It Never Happened?

It did. But it doesn’t count. Sting has two victories over Undertaker, but this was before Undertaker became the Undertaker.
Sting refused to ever leave WCW because he knew how important he was to the company. There was no way on earth that WCW would allow Sting to become so unhappy that he would leave. And the same is true for Undertaker in the WWE. The Undertaker was too loyal to the WWE to ever consider leaving, and WWE made damn sure he never wanted to.

Sting intended to sign a contract with the WWE when WCW closed down. But Sting hesitated, and asked to have extensive time off before going back to a full time schedule. When he considered returning, he noticed how former WCW stars DDP, Booker T, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Chris Benoit, Scott Steiner, Chris Jericho and Goldberg were getting on. Most of them were being buried by Triple H. Sting feared that it would hurt his legacy to join the WWE at that time, and he was enjoying being of the ring.

Some time later, Jeff Jarrett persuaded Sting to come out of retirement and join Jarrett’s own company, TNA Wrestling. Since then, Sting has refused to join the WWE simply out of loyalty to TNA. However, as he only signs 1-year contracts, the WWE has had opportunities to negotiate with Sting. And the WWE has come very close to getting Sting to agree to face Undertaker at WrestleMania. Sting knows that this one match could be the biggest of his career, and win or lose, it would not damage his legacy.

Sting is beginning to worry that his age means that he will not be able to give wrestling fans the best match possible, so he has frequently turned it down to avoid ruining the dream match. At the same time, the Undertaker’s health gets much worse with each passing year. The point in which Undertaker will never be able to compete ever again is getting very close.

#2. Shawn Michaels vs The Rock

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Shawn Michaels and The Rock are two of the most charismatic and energetic wrestlers to have ever competed in the WWE. And they are arguably two of the most popular of all time. This became a dream match recently when the WWE finally realised that they have never had a match together.

Why It Never Happened?

The truth is, no-one knows why. There were a lot of times in 1997 in which Shawn Michaels could have had some sort of match against the young Rocky Maivia. Michaels injury and initial retirement in 1998 meant that there was a four year period in which Shawn Michaels was out of the company. In 2002, Michaels returned, but the Rock had left to make movies. For a while, the Rock would return for WrestleMania season until he stopped returning all together.

Shawn Michaels retired for the final time in 2011. It was also around that time when the WWE were negotiating with the Rock to have his infamous match against Cena at WM28. After Michaels retired, fans started commenting on the WWE Twitter and Facebook accounts that they would have like to have seen Michaels and Rock face off instead. An unknown WWE.com journalist looked for Michaels “first match” against the Rock so he could put it on the website. But he couldn’t find it, because it never actually happened.

#1. Hulk Hogan vs Steve Austin

Why Is It A Dream Match?

Hulk Hogan became one of the biggest stars in the 1980’s. He quit the WWE because he felt that he could make more money from producing movies. As many of his movies were being produced in the same movie studio that WCW made their television shows in, it was easy for WCW to make Hogan an irresistible offer. And thanks to Hogan’s influence, Hogan made sure that he remained the biggest star in WCW throughout the ‘90’s.

“Superstar” Steve Austin was one of the fastest rising stars in the company. WCW management were keen to make him into a major star, but they had no ideas on how to introduce him to the main event scene. Austin himself pitched the idea of being a Hogan impersonator, feuding with Hogan. While management loved the idea, Hogan took personal offense to it. Austin was doomed to the mid-card level until he was unceremoniously fired.

As we all know, Austin eventually made it to the WWE and became the biggest star in wrestling, even outshining Hogan. Hogan continued to criticise Austin publicly, claiming that he would never be a major star, even though Austin was much bigger than Hogan in the late ‘90’s.
During the 2006 Hall Of Fame Ceremony before WrestleMania 22, Hogan made an unscripted comment about beating Austin. When Austin took to the stage later in the night, he essentially accepted Hogan’s challenge.

Why It Never Happened:

It was supposed to.

When Hogan returned to the WWE in 2002, the plan was for Hogan to face The Rock at WM X-8, and then Austin at WMXIX. But both Austin and Hogan left shortly after WMX-8. Both men did return the next February. It was also around this time when Austin confessed to why he quit; his neck injury meant he would have to retire. This meant that Austin only had one good match in him. But one month was not enough time to build up a sufficient feud between Austin and Hogan. But Austin had enough history with the Rock, and Hogan with McMahon.

Since then, Austin has been training in the hopes of having one last great match. But he has yet to find a suitable opponent. Hogan always insists on ‘creative control’ in his contracts, meaning that he can choose who wins his matches. Austin is not prepared to take a loss to Hogan, and the WWE is not prepared to have Hogan beat Austin. The only way around this is if Hogan humbles himself and allows Austin to pick up the win. But it will never happen.

Anyway, everyone wants to see Austin vs Punk.
